Well, best is really subjective and more of a personal choice.

For me, I have a .357 magnum as my main home defense handgun. I don't have a shotgun. But I'm leaning towards a Mossberg 590A1 as my choice. :D

Do you have any in mind?

As for a handgun, I have owned many, and my personal favorite is my Glock 23 (it's a .40 caliber Smith&Wesson). It's powerful enough for great protection (more powerful than a 9mm), but small enough to carry concealed. When I holster it under a sweater or a loose shirt, you would never know.

Don't have any currently. But being being a veteran and stationed in the military for 4 years I have experience with several types of weapons including various handguns. When I was stationed in Germany, my unit also trained with German soldiers and I qualified and received certification on a German soldier handgun.

Good one and for the money (cheaper) a Glack Model 22 .40 Caliber is possibly the best deal around.

Not a hand-gun, but AK-47 sounds like a good defense option.

:ot2:

I have a Ruger P95 9mm, as the home gun, if I need to carry conceal PM (Makarov) is a best option, small, light and does the job also very cheap.

As everyone else said before, there is no best gun. I suggest going to a gun shop that has a gun range where you can test fire multiple guns. I have and it makes a difference on which gun you may ultimately choose/purchase. If it is legal in your area, get hollow point bullets for your handgun (I took a handgun safety class and that is what my instructor recommended).

I just found it odd that someone familiar with guns would direct someone to a 4 year old Yahhoo answers question for information. I would have expected some first hand knowledge and more relevant information. No biggie.

For self defense handguns it is hard to beat a good quality M1911 .45 There are a numnber of manufacturers that would fall into the "good quality" description.

For a shotggun any good quality pump or semi-auto 12ga. Remington M870 express is a good one.

I second these choices. You'd have self defense/home defense covered.

And not just any hollow points - good quality like:

1. Winchester Law Enforcement Ammunition "Ranger T-Series"

2. Federal Premium Law Enforcement "HST"

If those two are good enough for the FBI and police departments around the country - then its it good enough for me.

The only problem with those two brands, they are hard to find, but I was lucky to find both on http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/Default.aspx

Depends on your price range, ease of use, who is going to use it? Semi-auto or a revolver? A revolver can fire with out any worries about looking for a safety or loading a round in the dark. .357 you can use .38's for practice and load it with .357 hollow points. Simple to use. Shotguns you have so many choices from pumps to side by side's over and under and automatics. Then you can pick from reliable manufacturers,

Ruger, Smith and Wesson, Colt, Sig Sauer, anything like those stay away from off brands and Taurus. Just FYI I had an FFL license bought owned and sold more guns than anyone I know. Hehe except for one other guy. My favorite is the M-14 .308 sore shoulder after a day of using that.
