Hello everyone,

I had my K1 visa interview end of March. The consulate officer said he approves everything and congratulates me, but there is one condition. I was told my police certificate didn’t reflect on all my names ever used. It only showed the current name I am using. I told the consulate officer I will go to the local police department right away and bring in a new police certificate that afternoon (without knowing it is so hard to obtain a new one). However, the local police department was not helpful and refused to issue a new police certificate that shows all my names ever used (they said I had official name changes certificate, the previous names are no longer valid and they won’t put them on the police certificate.)

I was very frustrated. I went back to US consulate and told the lady at the counter I am experience hardship obtaining a police certificate with all names used. She suggested me to try a different police department and maybe ask them for a copy of the police certificate application form (that way I can show the consulate officer the police actually did a search on all names). She then gave me two pieces of paper: a letter quoting 221g and what document is required and an authorized courier form to return the items to the consulate. I went to three different police departments, but I had no luck and was only given three police certificates with my current name, but I did get copies of the application forms. I sent the US consulate all my police certificates, application forms and my passport last Wednesday (April 4).

Now, it’s been over a week and I am worried. I don’t know if the US consulate received my passport and police certificates. I sent them an email but haven’t heard back. I checked with the courier company and was told it has been delivered.

I don’t know if my passport and police certificate will be lost in transit. I don’t know if I will get the K1 visa. Do you know how long the wait time is?

Does anyone know how they would notify me? I check my email and the US consulate login page numerous times a day.

I don’t know what I can do now.

Thanks for your help!

Melanie

You don't say whether you're dealing with Vancouver or Montreal, but the US consulates in Canada are very responsive to emails. Vancouver in particular, in my experience, will get back to you within 24-36 hours if you email them at VancouverK@state.gov and include your consulate case number. I don't know Montreal's email address off hand, and I don't think they're quite as fast as Vancouver, but they're very good too, much better than the consulates in many other countries. If you email them to ask for the status on your case, they should let you know what's going on, I would think.

DON'T PANIC

"It says wonderful things about the two countries [Canada and the US] that neither one feels itself being inundated by each other's immigrants."

-Douglas Coupland
