Does anyone know the process of registering a child for school if they are the child of the K1 Parent. Can they even attend school.

Probably depends on what state you are in. In Georgia, my step daughter (K2), started school one week after she arrived here. They put her in a international transition program for testing, to determine her grade level (one day of testing), and then off to school. They were interested in immunizations, and hers were complete.

I don't know rules everywhere but I'm just sharing mine.. I came here with K1 visa and my daughter was K2. We got here October 2011 and after a week, my daughter went to school, its a public school. Before that, the school just wanted to be sure that she has all the vaccinations required. So took her to the health department and had her vaccine, then some requirements from me and from my husband (that time we were not married yet). My passport, my daughters passport, house bill ( my husband had the electric bill). I guess that's it.. Hope this one helps..

Basically you just had to prove your identity as well as the childs. Im just asking because I know the K1 benefiary cant work until they adjust their status I thought it would go for the child as well.

What Ann25 says is correct. The child can begin school right away, although you should probably check into the specifics prior to their arrival, have a school lined up, etc... Be sure to get the childs records from school in DR too. Once the child receives a SS# and formal documents, the school will most likely request copies for their records.

hello!we enrolled my daughter to school here in florida 1 week after we arrived.they check my daughter's immunization record which was not updated so we went to the health department for her shots (for free),then she had her physical (cost us 30$ done at walmart),they asked for my daughter's school records-showed them her recent report card, then my fiance's utility bill-shows we really live in that particular area.

Good to know. Did they ask that your child have a SS# at the time.

Here is the thing about social security numbers, and K-2 children: The SSA will not issue your child a SS# until he or she has their GC. After awhile, we were able to apply for an ITIN#, but we did so at tax time. We live in an area where there are many illegal immigrants, or the more politically correct term, undocumented immigrants, and many parents are using another's SS# in order to enroll their children into school. I told the school that if a new child immigrant has a SS#, and does not yet have residency, then most likely they are not here legally. I told them this, but only after they pressed us for numbers, alluding to the law, that all children, in order to attend school, must have a SS#. Our children, needless to say, did enter the school system without any more problems.

I agree with all the inputs here, in my son's case was quite the same, i had his last report card certified for int'l use, but the school sayed it wasn't necesary, had all his vaccination papers, passport, and that was all, they never asked for SS#. I would say it all depends on the school policy, firts choose you school and they will tell you what they need, but Kids on k-2 visa don't have any problem attending school. Good Luck!
