Australian Tax Return

Just a quick question for Australians leaving before the end of the financial year. How do we go about lodging our tax returns for the 2011/2012 financial year? Do we have to do an early one or can you just do it using their online system (I think its ETax) while you are in America?

Thanks!

I'll be using the E-Tax on line. I spoke with the Tax office before I left and was advised to put on my last return, which will be this year's, that I don't intend to lodge again. They will finalise my tax record. If I don't put this in as an intention then they will keep my record open and want further evidence that I have not earned any Aussie income, which may result in an audit. If I return to Aus and need to file in the future they can re-open my tax file number, no worries.

My accountant told me to send it with my group tax next year....(well that was two years ago and I havent bothered....as I changed my name and my name is still different in Australia and its just too hard for the 200 bucks that Im likely to get back)

My mum did it for me (she's an non-practicing but qualified accountant) via E-tax. We noted "won't be filing again" like Chippy's Girl said. I also removed my name from the electoral roll.
