"Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN (and issue a card) or issue you a new card (if you have an SSN)? You must answer "Yes" to this question and to the "Consent To Disclosure" in order to receive an SSN and/or card."

Meauxna,

DS230 Part II has nothing to do with K1 is that what you are trying to say?

Ummmmm.. no, I wouldn't be the one to come out and say that.

Part II is usually done at the visa interview, for the types of cases I look at. I don't know how/if/when it's used in a K-1 visa application. I just wanted to comment on the Social Security application portion.

We filled out Part II ahead of time and took it to the interview with us (overkill). I'd go with what your Consulate sent you and not worry about it. If it is a part of your visa application, it will be handed over at the interview. I do remember that it must be signed in front of the ConOff.

Looks like all the K-1ers in this thread agree that you would only get Part I in your 'packet 3', so I would not worry about it if I were you.

(but if you ever do get it, you won't get a SS# from it )

As meauxna said, there is the question

"Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN (and issue a card) or issue you a new card (if you have an SSN)? You must answer "Yes" to this question and to the "Consent To Disclosure" in order to receive an SSN and/or card."

Any CR-1/IR-1 applicant doing this, PLEASE realize that it is best for you to go to the SS office and apply anyways. After waiting 3 weeks my husband went to the office this morning just to find his number had never been generated. We now have to wait another 1-2 weeks.

Sorry I'll just pipe in with "that is your experience" :)

SSA reckons that the EAE program works about 60% of the time or so. Maybe mdyoung will post the stat for us again.

I suppose it's a gamble.

Also, the immigrant can be hired and work without the SS card, as long as the application has been made. The DS-230 has counted as an application, but much depends on the employer being willing to learn something new.
