Completely ramdom, I know... but I am very curious as to how other people do it. For me is a first time. I am madly in love with my boyfriend (soon to be husband) who lives in another country. I never thought I would be the one to do a long distance relationship. NEVER in my wildest dreams I thought I could... but true love takes us to different places, and makes us do things we thought we never could.

It is, without a doubt, the hardest thing I have ever had to do, but we are soooooo worth it. We have our ups and our downs, but most importantly we are always there for each other. I just wonder, how other people do it? how do you deal with the distance? Just curious...

Worked about 70 hours a week for 18 months.Astronomical phone bills, oh and skype too. That's how i coped.

We were on different days. I would get home from work at 7 at night, and it would be 3 am where he was.

How odd, but I saw an ad today for something that claims to make the miles go away. There is a video on youtube. It's called Pillow Talk, I kid you not

"Pillow Talk" to ease the pain. Each member of a couple wears a special ring sensor at night, and places a fabric panel inside his or her pillowcase. When one person goes to bed, the ring wirelessly communicates with his lover's pillow and causes it to gently glow. When he puts his head on the pillow, he can hear the real-time heartbeat of his partner, no matter how far away."

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

We are either on Skype or MSN everyday when I get off work till the time he goes to work. I travel to him every 3 or so months depending on my PTO that I have available at work. Gets harder everytime that I leave him. He'll be here in 3 days and I'll be there in about 30. We are usually texting all day... Seriously 10k plus text a month haha. We have conversations during my lunch break or my way home from work. Try to make it the most normal as possible. I have a cat and he's a cuddle bug so that help me during the times we aren't together or talking. So ready to have him here with me.

This is going to sound contrary to everyone else, and not really logical, but my wife and I sometimes limit our communication. We both have full-time jobs and while we often spend hours on Skype, we can also go days without it. All in all, time goes faster when we "do our own thing" and seems to move unbearably slow when we communicate all the time.

For us it has become a fine balance of keeping time passing by quickly, while keeping a healthy level of communication.

I definately agree!! He works nights and I work sometimes 12 hour days, but we seem to fill our days with our own thing during that time we don't have each and the level of missing the other isn't sometimes there at all.

Skype, every day (even when sleeping :D).

Ditto on that one. We're lucky enough to be in the same time zone and daylight savings is still manageable. Skype before bed, go to bed with the call still going on and waking up by either her saying my name or me saying mine. Really helps.

And of course, iMessage, whatsapp, and emails.

We have a similar timeline, hope we hear something soon. Also I fly out there almost every month to see her, so that helps even more.

WOW... love love loooooove hearing other people's stories!!! I know we are not the only ones going through it... I also know that we are not the only ones missing each other so much it literally hurts!! but oh how I wonder how other people cope with the distance!! Thank you everyone for giving us a little bit of your life. Believe it or not, just to actually know and read other people's experiences makes it a little more bearable too

Wishing us all a quick, very very quick Journey

We definitely love MSN!! We see each other literally everyday on webcam and basically talk about anything and everything. We carry on supporting each other and planning trips to see each other and other plans for our life like a regular couple. We have a 6 hour difference so he would call me when he is in bed before sleeping so i can tell him good night. And then before i would go to sleep, I would send him a "good morning" text everyday so when he wakes up he will read it. :D Emails are also fun and Facebook messaging is helpful. But recently I realized how important seeing him on webcam actually is. Last weekend he went out of town and was not near a computer all weekend. That was the longest that we did not see each other on webcam and by the end of the weekend we were both dying!! lol Just seeing him online is such a relief. We also visit each other every 2 months or so. Its actually his turn to come see me!!! :dancing: :dancing: So I am excited that he will be coming to Miami in 2 weeks!!!

True love cannot be restricted by distance!! (L)

Skype. And lots of talking about what we are going to do when we are together again :)

Sometimes I am musing how it used to be for couples BEFORE Internet, computers or even phones. Somehow it makes life more bearable.. LOL

My parents went through this process 33-34 years ago. And now I ask them how they did it, and man, it must've been painful. They said they spoke on the phone once every two weeks when my dad got paid and they wrote letters that usually took about two weeks to arrive, and then wait another two weeks for a reply. That just sounds painful, but it must've really made them stronger, as they have been married 32 years now....

That makes me very optimistic.

Like others stated, Skype, YM, emails works well. Keep busy! I hate Sundays now as I don't have to work weekends but don't like to think about her so much... So some weekends I work and I am salary :( just to keep my mind busy. Waiting for her passport to arrive so we can file is also a topic we discuss. I also found taking a day off from chatting on occasions or doing the chat from phone where i cannot see helps because when I do see her on YM cam the next day it is new and fresh. Don't know if that makes sense but it works. When I notice her crying on cam and trying to hide it from me as she misses me, I then change subject or take the next day off as it seems to help us emotionally. It sucks waiting, but what can we all do. This is a good support group so I read a lot too.

Near-daily Skype and email are godsends, plus knowing that it's a temporary separation gets you through this time.
