The first time I applied for my fiance at the time, I was also not working, no taxes, etc. The petition was approved with a cosponsor, we broke up but I don't think it'll be a problem unless you are dealing with a difficult consulate.

Where are you getting this information? I currently attend school and get both Pell Grants and subsided loans and I am a Permanent Resident.

Stafford loans are not means tested and are paid directly to the school.

Pell Grants and Subsidized Loans are means tested, and the intended immigrant will not be eligible for them, the US citizen, on the other hand is. If family contributes to paying for school, you wouldn't be eligible for them anyway.

I don't think Pell Grants are means tested public benfits.

They are awarded on academic performance and SAT results

and such.

Pell Grants and Subsidized loans are means tested. They have no bearing on academic performance, you can be dumb as a stump and still get a Pell, other than if you're failing your courses and put on academic probation.

BUT Green Card holders are allowed to receive the benefits. There I stand corrected.

Pell Grants are awarded usually only to students who have not earned a bachelor's or a professional degree. (Do not have to be re-paid)

To be eligible for a Pell grant, you must also meet the general federal student aid eligibility requirements. The amount depends on your financial need, costs to attend school, status as a full-time or part-time student, and plans to attend school for a full academic year or less.

A loan for which a borrower is not responsible for the interest while in an in-school, grace, or deferment status. Subsidized loans include Direct Subsidized, Direct Subsidized Consolidation Loans, Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans and Federal Subsidized Consolidation Loans.

Student Aid Eligibility

Eligibility for federal student aid is based on financial need and on several other factors. The financial aid administrator at the college or career school you plan to attend will determine your eligibility.

To receive aid from our programs, you must:

demonstrate financial need (except for certain non-subsidized loans).

You must be one of the following to receive federal student aid:

U.S. citizen

U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swain’s Island)

U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551C (Permanent Resident Card)
