Hello,

I have my SSN and it is under my maiden name. I am currently in the throes of obtaining my AOS should I go and apply to change my SSN to my married name?

Please can you advise how I can do this please? Or whether it would interfere with anything?

Many thanks,

You SHOULD be able to go to the local SSA office near you and using your marriage certificate get your SSC name changed. If it is not too far and you don't mind waiting a few hours. Otherwise you can wait until after you receive your GC to get the name changed on the SSC. It should not matter if the last name on the SSC is in your maiden name.

Good luck,

Dave

You're supposed to be able to change it but they don't like to when you're not in status (once your I-94 expires). It won't affect your AOS to have your SSN in your maiden name but once you get your EAD i would go and change it OR if you're not going to get a job until you get your GC, go once you have your GC to have the "work auth" part removed.

I had issues with mine after getting my green card. They said my name didn't match in the system or something, and now my SSN application has been sent to homeland security to see what is up. Hopefully that doesn't happen to you!! I have no idea what is going on.

Sherry - I've had the same problem as you. I have been asked a few times whether the Department of Homeland Security have been advised of my name change - err, yes, as USCIS is part of that and they were the ones that sent me my green card with my married name on it! Extremely frustrating when I had hoped to be free of them for a while. Can you let me know what happens with your application? I've had different info from SSA as to how long this will take.

They told me 4 weeks. It is so frustrating because when I got it the first time, under my maiden name (when it should have been my married name as we were married and I had my marriage certificate), the guy told me I made a mistake on my application. He told me I put my name in wrong. He claimed that I did not have a middle name, and kinda snapped at me asking why I applied that way. I told him that I DID have a middle name, and he said no, that was part of my first name. He never saw my birth certificate, how would he know? He said that based on my passport my first name has two names. I checked my long form birth certificate and it says under given names (note the s), and last name. No space for middle name. My mom made an obvious space between the two indicating a middle name. So, when I went to change my name now that I have my green card, I put my first and middle name as my first name because the guy instructed me to do that when I change my name. He told me to not make things more complicated than they need to be. I have a feeling that is what got screwed up initially, because she couldn't find me anywhere in the system, and my married name didn't match up to anything. At least this girl asked her supervisor for help, but it still wouldn't go through. I'll let you know what happens.

I was glad I got my SSN when I first came here because when I went back to the office they told me they couldn't find my name in the database, that is my married name. So I had to wait til I got my GC to change it. But because I came there and they knew I wanted to change the name on my SSN, sure enough after I got my GC, SSA automatically sent me my new SSN card.

Yes, I can understand your frustration. It seems that USCIS is not the only department that can give out the wrong information. I was kind of irritated that they couldn't find my name on the system since USCIS is part of the Department of Homeland Security, so I don't quite understand why one wouldn't automatically feed into the other. However, given that this process isn't logical to begin with, I think that expectation is too high! 4 weeks? I have a feeling your estimate may be more accurate than the two weeks I was told about. Do let me know what happens, and I'll let you know if I hear anything as well.

Glad to hear you got it - I have my SSN already many years ago and had tried to change it to at least update my address, but they wouldn't let me do that. Here's hoping they can resolve the issue for sherrybaby and myself soon!

I just simply waited for my employment card authorization/or Green card and went to Social security office with that and a marriage certificate to change it.It took a little while and there was no problem. They sent me new SSN card within 2 weeks.
