Hi - we've filed for AOS from a k1 visa and I have my biometics appointment later this month. My canadian passport expires Sept 2013 and I am just wondering what is the best procedure for changing your name in your passport...should I wait until all AOS is done - or should I get a new passport now even though we have applied for AOS...any help would be greatly appreciated!

You will have no problem traveling with your green card in your married name and passport in your maiden name until it is time to renew your passport; just make sure you are also carrying a copy of your marriage certificate. And airfare is always booked with the name as it appears on your travel document. If you are traveling internationally and using your passport, tickets must match the name on your passport or you might have issues being admitted in a foreign country or let alone board on the plane.

Also, be aware you cannot use the simplified passport renewal form to renew a passport with a name change. You will need to find a guarantor in Canada to certify (sign) your photos, making the renewal process from the U.S much more complicated. Consult Passport Canada website for more details: http://www.ppt.gc.ca/cdn/section1.aspx?lang=eng

US citizen since April 2016

ROC completed April 2014

AOS from K1 completed February 2012
