I heard on the radio today the Russians are deploying a weapons system that will fry the brains of anyone it hits - in effect turning them into zombies. If the zombies attacked your area, which weapons system would you rather be armed with and why?

I hate you Slim! You know I want both!

The Saiga would be better for close in the AR-15 better for longer range. Why do I have to choose one? This is like asking "do you want a bar-b-q grill or a microwave?" Dammit!

IMO, the best weapon would be an AR A-4 with an ACOG. Very rapid and accurate shot displacement, low recoil (for better follow up shots), effective at 300 yards (or a bit more) and ammo is readily available. But you will also need to carry a sidearm... A good double stack 9mm or .40 would be wonderful (because of the high capacity mags). Maybe even a Benelli 3 1/2" turkey gun for 30-60 yard fun. Again.... just IMO.

Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I heard that anyone that weapon was used against was going to get a job on one of the major news stations, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC. Maybe Keith Olberman could get his job back.

Those large magazines do nothing but overheat the weapons to the point they become useless. Many of those semi-automatic .22LR rifles have a lifespan measured in hundreds of rounds. The rimfire just doesn't last under a high rate of fire. It's a weak design.

Are you referring to bump fired type rate of fire? I could see that.

ok - what was that weapon the main character in 'Dogs of War' (Christopher Walken) used? It had a drum, could fire different types o payload.

IMO, that'd be best for zombies .

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Toward the middle you can see the weapon. It was a grenade launcher.

If this is true, slim should have added more options or perhaps made this a multiple choice poll.

Also - if a zombie invasion is imminent, does a federal mandate (with subsidies, of course) to purchase and get trained in the appropriate equipment make sense?

The reason these were the only two options is because they're around the same price range and affordable for most "casual sheeple" at the moment. I don't expect everyone to be able to dump $5,000 into a weapon system, but $1,000 isn't too far out of anyone's price range.

Federal mandates (or the lack thereof) will probably precede the zombie invasion. As much as I'd love to see federal training and certification available, they'd just bumble it all up and it'd end up like any other federal agency. The CMP does some training but they're not really a government organization anymore. Plus, they don't really do "zombie survival" training.

I wouldn't mind seeing a public option rifle though. Something like a tax break for guns and ammo procurement. That would stimulate the economy AND create jobs!

I am thinking .410 rounds may be harder to find when foraging for ammo and I would prefer to engage the enemy farther out, at the maximum effective range of the AR-15. Plus, the AR-15 can be made full auto with an easily manufactured drop-in-pull-out addition.

The Saiga 12 is 12ga. although, you can get one in .410. I'm in agreement though, .410 will be harder to find and that's why I'd rather have the 12 ga. One of the main reasons I'm leaning toward the shotgun is because of the various ammo options it offers and other roles it can fill. Ever try hunting birds with an AR?

As for full auto... it's a waste of ammo. Anything you can do with an AR of full auto you can do better with an AR on semi.

The best zombie defense is probably something in .22LR that has a drum.

I'm not sure if a .22LR will have the stopping power necessary to discontinue an attack. While I'm positive well-placed headshots would result in making the undead dead again I'm not so sure body shots would make non-stationary cadavers stationary again.

I'm pretty sure the 5.56 of the AR will do so and I'm 100% sure the 12ga. will stop just about anything in it's tracks.(I acknowledge there are stopping power issues with the 5.56 but I don't think the zombies will be as motivated as some of our enemies overseas.)

I will have my .22s with me when SHTF and they will be good for convincing crowds there are easier targets out there. But, in the scenario of "OMG, there are 45+ mobile corpses around me and I need to repel them." I'm thinking something bigger would be better.

m2.jpg

It goes without saying if I had the money I would have a .50cal and that would be my go-to SHTF weapon of choice. It would be mounted on my Jeep right now.

However, my income is not such that I can outfit with ma deuce. I do have a "Barrett M-82A1 savings account" going though. In another forty or fifty years I should have one.

Aren't both of these weapons somewhat prone to jamming? For the zombie apocalypse, that could be a major liability. You would at least want to have several good backups.

No.

If you read the gun forums, sure, you may think they have some issues. But, my own personal weapons systems do not jam. Probably 99% of jams are caused by the same thing that makes guns inaccurate - OE, or Operator Error. Once all the issues have been worked out and they've been properly operated, the guns themselves work fine. They're simple machines, after all.

At current I run an AR with a red dot and have a Para P-14 on my hip. I have an assortment of shotties with the Winchester 1300 Defender being my primary. That's almost too much stuff to carry. I can keep one long gun slung over my back and carry the other but I don't have that versatility that the Saiga would give me.

What I'm looking at with the Saiga is ditching the sidearm and the other long gun and just running one platform for everything. I can carry a variety of ammo instead of a variety of guns.

That's kind of what I have right now. I don't have an EOTech but I have a red dot. Almost the same thing. And the zombie max ammo is simply a marketing ploy.

On that note, ammo is a huge point of debate as well. Some people say you need FMJs, some say you need hollow points, some say 55, some say 77.... I've yet to see the 5.56 round that doesn't work on soft targets.

From where I sit, WPA in bulk is about the best ammo you can buy. If available, I'll splurge and get the Silver Bear 62gr HPs (just because they're stupid accurate out of my A2 and HPs would be better against softer targets) but it's amazing to me when folks insist on having hand-loaded 77gr. Black Hills stuff... especially when they say, "because it's more accurate!"

I'm gonna choose the SAIGA-12, in the end.

I have to assume that ammunition won't be readily available after the Zombie apocalypse starts ,

and I can repack my 12 gauge shells with gunpowder and anything else I can crib together..

Keep yer powder dry, but a 20 kg brick of it should be an early purchase, with some reusable dehumidifying packets thrown in for good measure.

So for 'the shot pellets' replacements - crikey - almost any metal can be reused, heck even some dense plastic, even crushed glass.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
