The other night Wade's family was talking about going camping on memorial weekend. They told me all the activities we will do and mentioned swimming. I told them that I don't know how to swim and Wade's dad was really shocked. He was like "Are you sure you're a Filipino?!?!, Filipinoes are good swimmers". He said that it's a Filipino stereotype, well a positive stereotype.

I am curious if it's true. I don't know how to swim and I think only 5% of my friends know how. Even in the family, only my mother and my father know how to swim. How about your wife, does she know how to swim?

My wife living in Philippines now....she 30 years old and also not know how to swim..

My fiancee anne does know how to swim, actually she is a good swimmer. It makes so much fun because we can swim together. My fiancee's family live far from the beaches but still her family can swim.

Lol this made me remember during one of our trips. My then fiance and I went snorkeling without lifeguards, the water was more than 50ft deep and I got cramps, I almost drowned and he saved me life. Just sharing!

No, Jena doesn't know how to swim. I was quite surprised when I found out. She had to take a boat to and from highschool and college everyday.

Wahahaha! Me too. Still have. Phobia for both. I can stay in the water but can't swim, I have my car so I won't bother to learn to ride bicycle here ever.

Before my fiance came over to meet me, he referred to me as an islander girl. He thought that since im from this country of 7107++ islands, naturally, i would know how to swim and stuff. Told him the term isn't applicable for me because i grew up in Manila and neither my parents are from the province and near bodies of water. He only realized that when he came here and learned that ive got to travel 3-4 hours to get to a nice beach from where i live lol. Anyway, i had swimming classes in highschool and have access in pools in the metro but the reason i didnt learn how to swim is because of phobia when i almost drowned 3 times when i was a kid. Been trying to do something about it, and maybe its no biggie for some, but helmet diving in 20-30 feet in Boracay is already a feat and somehow helped me. I know once i get past the fear, it will be easier to learn how to swim, and its never too late, so i guess you should be fine.

Well, my ex wife is Filipina and I remember many years ago when I married her there in the Philippines and we were on our honeymoon and I was really shocked to find out that she did not know how to swim! I just took for granted that she did because after all she is an island girl and I just assumed she was a swimmer. My current wife is of course Filipina also and guess what? She does not know how to swim either! But all of her brothers and uncles and nephews are excellent swimmers. Same with my ex, all of her male family members are excellent swimmers and a few of her cousins and nieces are as well, the younger ones.

Yes. with my ex is really shocked me that she did not swim. But then, that's what I get for assuming that all islanders love the water and are excellent swimmers!

My fiancee and her family are good swimmers. But they do live on an island 30 feet from the water.. I even got her to jump off a diving board after standing on it for 20 minutes. But I have met so many that can't swim nor do they want to... Even if they live right next to water.

Funny  i live in mountainous Baguio but i know how to swim cuz i got interested in learning it. So i think it will depend on their interests. I learned to swim myself! Just observed how others do it in the pool and asked few questions. I did it! :star: But my wonderful loving cheesecake hubby doesn't like swimming though he can swim. I still love him so much though! (L) (L)

When I was young my family always go to the beach every afternoon. But my mother won't allow us to go deeper because she's so afraid that we'll drown. Then when I was on my teenage years I'll just go to the beach with my friends to relax and not to swim for fear that I'll get too dark. When I met my husband, I don't really have a choice but to learn since he loves the beach so much and we always go for island hopping. He was surprised to know too that I don't know how to swim since I live on an island. At first I used a life jacket but it doesn't feel good since the lifejacket goes to my neck and Im having a hard time breathing. But now I can swim, not a strong swimmer but at least I can float..=)

  • 1 month later...

That sucks that some Filipinos don't know how to swim. They're missing out on a LOT.

Been to quite a few islands outside the Philippines and I must tell you I've never enjoyed swimming more than when I was in waters just near the shores of the Philippines :)

of those differences between us, for it is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence.
And there are so many silences to be broken.”

My fiance didn't know how to swim either. We have a condo in Manila that has three big pools, and two months ago they were offering swimming lessons so she signed up. Pretty cute, it was almost all little kids, and then my fiance. But she had fun, and feels more comfortable in the water. I think the assumption that since you live near the ocean you learn to swim. But lots of areas of coastline aren't conducive to swimming, and my fiance grew up in Mindinao, not near the ocean.

I think many Filipinos don't know how to swim.
