The other night Wade's family was talking about going camping on memorial weekend. They told me all the activities we will do and mentioned swimming. I told them that I don't know how to swim and Wade's dad was really shocked. He was like "Are you sure you're a Filipino?!?!, Filipinoes are good swimmers". He said that it's a Filipino stereotype, well a positive stereotype.

I am curious if it's true. I don't know how to swim and I think only 5% of my friends know how. Even in the family, only my mother and my father know how to swim. How about your wife, does she know how to swim?

i suppose it's the assumption that if one lives near water (i.e on the coast or on an island), they'll be more likely to know how to swim than one that doesn't live near water (i.e. middle of a desert or arid area).

Not necessarily. I didn't know many Marshallese that knew how to swim (they just sorta flailed helplessly in the water until they found something to hold onto, or made it back to shore), and if you believe the GW crowd, most of that nation will soon be underwater.

Funny you brought this up. Just two months ago I was visiting my wife in Manila and our hotel had a pool. I was surprised to learn that she couldn't swim. Lucky for her the water wasn't very deep so she could play around and still have fun (in fact one of our pics in our profile shows us in the pool together). Good times!

She couldn't swim when I met her. I think half the problem is trying to wear long loose shorts and an over sized T-shirt in the water. There's just too much dragging her down in all that. I got her to switch to tight shorts and a bikini top. She still won't completely wear a regular swimsuit, either a one or two piece. She does swim now, but I wouldn't call her a strong swimmer.

LOL seriously ??? I didn't know that. As from the Philippines thought most filipino's know how to swim specially that we are sorouded by 7,100 something Islands in Philippines "high tide or low tide" . Anyway my father is a fisherman and we lived 30ft away from the water, so I learned to swim since I was 5. I met very few people that dont know how swim in the Philippines.... "few" not most.. so I guess what you heard is probably a B.S :P .

Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years.

My wife doesn't know how to swim either and was raised a stones throw from the Gulf of Leyte. I think a lot of it has to do with all the ferrys that sink there. She, along with most of the rest of the family, are even afraid to get in a boat. I don't think any of the family actually swims (wading doesn't count lol). They were surprised to see I could swim when we went to Samar for a day at the beach. I did think it's kinda odd to live on an island and not be able to swim blink.gif. I'd be a little nervous hahaa!

sounds like they have a real incentive to learn quickly.
