Hi everyone,

So me and my fiance'e are finally living together yay! it took us about 4 months to recieve our k-1 visa from vermont service center.

we were just wondering though, I myself am the beneficiary who moved to virginia from canada to live with my fiancee (we arent married yet) and ive never had a drivers liscence even in my own country back home in canada, even though we arent married yet (i know we have 90 days lol) can i go ahead and apply to get my drivers liscense?

whats the best way to do all this? get married THEN apply for a SSN and then my drivers liscense?

or can we go ahead now even though we arent married yet and apply for ssn and go and get my liscense?

thanks everyone!

The SSN you can apply for right away but we generally say "Wait about two weeks so you're in the system". It'll make the process a bit easier.

Driving licence depends on your state requirements! But usually you need to at least have the NOA1 from you AOS application

You can apply for SSN right away.

But with DL it might be more complicated:

1. You say you've never had DL. Can you drive? To get DL you need to pass road driving test in addition to written test.

2. You need to check with Virginia DMV, but I doubt they will be willing to issue you any document before you have your GC in hand.

Hey JessicaDiana! How are you and your fiancee doing today? Regarding the ssn and driver's license which you asked, as a k1 visa holder you have to wait for 10 business day (logically 2weeks) from the day you entered the U.S. before you can apply. The reason the social security administration said 10 business day is to enable them have your name register in the system by the immigration. When you received your social security number, then you can now apply for your driver's license. This is how it works dear. So therefore, if you have stayed more than 10 business day (2weeks) you can walk freely into any social security administration office and apply for your card. Bear in mind that you will have with you your passport with the valid I-94 in it. All the best.

Jessica, you'll be well served to visit Virginia's Dept. of Motor Vehicles. Since you've never had a driver's license, you will first have to secure a learner's permit before taking the tests for a driver's license.

Please note that in addition to having a Social Security number, there are additional residence requirements as well as completing a Virginia-approved driver's education course.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
