So, we got our case number on April 2nd 2012:

1- Does it mean we got approved in NVC?

2- Where can we use this case number now? I mean can we use it to track something (such as our approval to consulate or the arrival time to the consulate) regarding our K1?

3- How long does it usually take to hear from consulate after they receive our file?

Thank you in advance,

wish you all LUCK!

1. It doesn't mean you case was "approved" at NVC, it just means they received your case from USCIS, reviewed it, assigned a case number and now it's ready to be send to your consulate.

2. Depending on how your consulate works, you may need it (I only needed it for one form, but in Philippines for example, people can schedule their medical and pay visa fees as soon as they have it. You can't track online anything with this case number as you could do with your USCIS receipt number. If you want some update about your case, you can call the Department of State (DOS), and they will ask for your case number so they can look for you.

3. This question is country-specific. Look at timelines of members who dealt with your consulate. :)

I'm sure you'll understand me being impatient! :P Just want to ask another question regarding NVC: Does the case number mean that they sent our file to consulate? Because they just gave him the case number nothing about the consulate!

Have you got your case number by calling NVC or from a letter you received? When I got mine, they told me on the phone "your case will be sent to the consulate tomorrow". Sometimes they do some additional background processing at NVC (it usually delays the process of a few weeks), but I have no idea if it's before or after assigning a case number. Call them if you want to be sure.

Otherwise, you should receive a letter about a week later, basically saying your case was at NVC and that it was forwarded to the consulate.
