No pictures yet sorry. I spent all weekend and all day yesterday making another flower garden I just planted a yellow rose bush (very excited about that one), a pink and yellow peony, some striped petunias, and a bright pink daisy. I expanded the spot where I put the red rose bush and it looks so nice now I can't wait till the roses bloom.

I added a bleeding heart, and some impatients to another flower bed. I also planted 3 rows of tomatoes, 2 rows are roma tomatoes (for sauce) and the other has cherry tomatoes for the little one to munch on later on. Another row of sweet banana peppers, and green peppers, a row of eggplant, and 3 rows of bush wax beans, a row or pole green beans and 1 row of bush green beans. Another row of snow peas, I still have to get my yellow water mellow, cucumbers, and zucchini in the ground. We have a vegie napper so we try not to plant hot things for now.

Our trees are covered in peaches, plums, nectorines, and approcots we just hope that we got them sprayed in time before the little worms got them.

Most awesome. Lot of work but will pay off. The only add I would do is some squash and maybe some spinach. Thanks for sharing and please keep us updated.

Same here. I have a nice house with a lot of room for a garden but have to wait till next year for the garden. I am going to start the fruit trees and put in a few rose bushes this year.

Most excellent. Do a good feeding at first heavy. Thanks for the pic.

That looks good. I am getting envious! I'm a noob at this whole gardening thing and unlike my Mama and grandmothers in the PH who have plenty of space to grow plants, I can only do container gardening for now. It's still fun. I started container gardening because I want to be more in control of what I eat and also to test if I have a green thumb like the matriarchs in my family.

Glad to see the initiative. Container gardening is hard to accomplish right but you will be happy when you are eating what you grew yourself. Let us know how it goes please.

Seems like that time of year, garden fans, when everyone is thinking about planting for the rest of the year.

Anyone else doing fruit and veg as well as flowers this year?

We had such a horrible winter here in Virginia that we are really behind with Spring vegetable planting - just one bed of spring greens in so far. I'm about to start tidying up the flower beds and putting some colour in there.

I'm not doing a vegetable garden this year, as I just had a baby and I would already behind. I did plant 3 new rose bushes last week and spread out a few tulips. I think I may add a few other flowers at some point but it may just be cleaning up my flower beds this year.

We have 9 fruit trees and have no plans for more trees but we do need to replace 2 blueberry bushes.

So the husband only cares about edible produce in the garden. He's not interested in flowers at all. This is the first year (after having a baby in 2010) where I think I can put enough energy into the vegetable gardening and do all the flower stuff on my own. Only had enough energy through the newborn and toddler stage to deal with the vegetable weeding and planting and harvesting and canning and freezing and jam making etc.

But I am a flower novice. We have several shady areas which I would like to add a little colour to. Either side of the porch steps - gets a little morning sun but mostly shady. And the areas under three big trees which is always shady.

Ideally I would like colorful perennials which need little maintentance!!! Too much to ask?

Omg. This is a reawakening. Do you really still do canning or make jam? Now that is some memories. I grew up having to help prepare and then go through the canning process and then store. It was a huge chore every year.

Yes - I usually make enough jam to last the year for ourselves and give a few jars away as gifts. We have huge blueberry bushes which give a lot of fruit, plus a lot of wild black raspberries. And if we get a lot of tomatoes at the end of the season which may not ripen then I make green tomato marmalade or chutney.

I usually pickle and can a lot of our green beans, cucumbers and this year I'm going to try to pickle okra too.

I'm usually a bit lazy when it comes to canning the other vegetables though and opt for freezing because we have a huge commercial-size freezer in the basement, and last year we bought a generator to make sure it keeps going through any power cuts so I'm not worried about losing our stock of food.

With the tomatoes I slow roast them on big trays in the oven with garlic and herbs and then fill quart bags and stack them in the freezer to use in pasta sauces etc through the winter.

Then we store potatoes in the basement to get us through most of the winter. And this year I might try to see if we can grow some other root veg to store.

The husband wants us to try to be as self sufficient as possible although it's a lot of work to produce that amount of food.

nom!

I can't garden yet. No home of my own.

The snow doesn't help much either. LOL

I make blueberry, strawberry, and we have wild blackberries to make jam out of.

Pickled green and wax beans are yummy!

I will miss the veggie garden this year, unless some how I get enough ambition to try and juggle the baby and toddler to do it.

Roasting tomatoes to freeze last year.

That is a great idea, I don't know why I never thought of doing it like that.

I always just made a big batch of pasta sauce then froze it.
