Yikes!

I'd never even considered about the roots of nearby trees before. We have some huge firs next to our cabin - thoughts anyone about whether I should be worried.

No. You should be fine. The one tree that seems close is far enough away and has a healthy drip line from its own canopy to provide its own nourishment. Even the drip line from the cabin is healthy and the run off should gravitate downward toward the tree. Even if the roots over shoots its own drip line it should be no bother to the cabin structure. Very nice cabin and beautiful scenery.

Thanks - that puts my mind at ease. We had one tree in the woods behind cut down this summer which looked as though it might be a problem in a bad storm. The good news with that is we have a great head start on next year's wood for the stove.

Luckytxn - so nice to see you back in this thread. Although gardening news here is slowing down as we head into winter. Anyone in warmer climes have much growing action over winter?

We have fingers crossed for a small fall vegetable garden - and then my next thoughts will be end of Jan when I start some seedlings inside. And then get ready to plant the early spring greens in March.

How does everyone else plan for their garden through the winter? And do you have a pre-winter closing down the garden and clearing up routine?

My pleasure Lynne. It is great to be able to congregate with other Garden lovers. Any that can give love to plants are the same people that can give love to others.

Sometimes trees have to go to protect our environment. I also have a tree that might have to go. We get hurricanes at times and it is too big and too close to our business.

It is that time of year again and thought I would restart this old thread. Lyne reminded me of it.

My babe and I bought a old house and have been renovating it so the time to start our first garden is maybe next year. I will be this year whipping the yard into shape though and we do have plans on planting a few fruit trees. May try to start her a small garden for herbs and such.

I do hope everyone's garden season is a good one. Remember plants will only give us the love that we give them. God bless all.

Good luck with the fruit trees etc. ! It's very satisfying to eat from your own garden.

We had a great year for fruit trees down here in San Antonio. My lil olive tree has grown at least 4 feet taller, the lemon tree (6 years old and about 8x8 feet) still has ripe fruit as well as little green balls and is also covered in new blooms. The figs are starting to leaf out and the pomegranates are green and bushy. I have a little Ruby Red grapefruit tree in a patio pot and even it produced several fruit.

Here is one of my tangerine trees:

It will take me a lifetime to get my yard in shape. We have 2 peach, 2 nectarine, 3 plum, and 2 apricot tress, they are 3 yrs old. we did have lots of fruit on them last year, but worms got them all. I was not happy, we are trying to beat the bugs this year and the trees are flowering now.

We also have 7 blueberry bushes. I made jam last year, our youngest little one loved to eat the blueberries right off the bush, we had trouble keeping her out of them. Diapers were a mess  We also have blackberries and I was able to make jam out of them also. I'm late getting my vegetable garden started.

I did plant some new flowers in one of my flower beds in the back yard today. I need to weed out the front ones and plant some more. My tulips and daffodils look good regardless of the weeds. I planted my first rose bush last year and she is waking up with some new growth. I couldn't believe how many time she flowered last year, I had roses into November. I also have a gardenia plant oh how that has beautiful smelling flowers in the summer.

Great pic. I also had a great year on my tangerine and orange tree we have at our business. I was planning on planting two tangerine trees at the house and not sure yet on a couple of others. I will let my babe choose. I looked at our trees at the business and see that I need to do a tad of trimming and pruning and soon.

Awesome. I was thinking of planting a plum tree and maybe a peach. Not going to be able to start a big vegetable garden this year as we are still renovating the house as we move in and that takes all our time but next year I have plans on having the best in the area.

All the beds around the business are a mess and next week plan on cleaning them out and start the rose bush ordeal again. All of them responded well from last year and they are already flowering. They need serious work though and then start the feedings.

I also just looked at the trees and noticed that I will need a half day to get them under control. A compost pile I had started two years ago are now going to be used for the flower beds around the rose bushes.Going to be a great year again.

I am so envious of y'all being able to start gardens. I am in a condo this year, but I love having a veggie garden. I can't wait to move to Texas and have an actual growing season! I want to be able to grow veggies and even maybe have a flower garden too. I suppose it will depend where we end up settling. I look forward to seeing pictures as the gardens start growing.

I live in a townhouse now. I started a container garden my first year, the squirrels found it but I had gotten enough and didn't mind so badly. Second year the squirrels were harvesting before anything was ripe. Now I just plant flowers.

Mixed blessings. No need to go through all the hassles. On the other side it is nice to have fresh veggies that are harvested right outside.

I totally feel the same, except that I'm not moving to TX. I've just started buying kits for growing herbs. I want to grow herbs and peppers to start with and hopefully vegetables next.

You will love growing your own herbs and peppers. It is a given that we will have peppers in our garden. Good luck and remember that the plants will return the love that you give them.
