I need to get a couple more bags of soil to add to my garden before I can start planting. I have started some small pots of rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano, cilantro, cherry tomatoes and watermelon..

I also plan to plant carrots and squash. We bought some small plants of roma tomatoes and peppers too...

Would love to see some pics when done if able. Last week I cleaned all the beds and spread compost and mixed. Added plant food and watered well. Tomorrow I finish making a new flower bed. I expect about two yards of garden soil needed to fill it up and spread some in the older beds. The wife is supposed to be planting seeds in the pots and by next week or two will transplant to the beds. I'm planning on two new rose bushes this year also.

Lovely pictures - I really wish we had a pool. We have a large pond that my husband says is fine (he's been swimming in it since he was a boy) but the fish nibble you while you swim and it's a bit off-putting.

Has anyone tried using soda bottles as temporary cloches?

I have to go to the UK for two weeks and I'm worried about my seedlings dying while I am away - if people forget to water them! So I am experimenting with this technique for half of my seedlings to see which fare better. The idea is it keeps them a little protected while the weather is still a bit uncertain inside.

I might have a pool but..... you have "people" to water your gardens??? :P:lol:

the attempt looks green house-y in minature but I have never personally tried it...I wish you luck... and good travels.

Only thing I thought of ...what happens if it is way too sunny on the bottle?? would it cause the effect to burn the seedling if you are not there????

LOL - when I say 'people', I mean my husband and my mother-in-law!

I don't know about the sun effect. It's only for the first two weeks of May though so perhaps it will be fine. I kept half of my seedlings inside to compare which ones survive the best.

I used bottle cloches during my giant pumpkin growing madness. If the external temps stay below 25C, you should be OK. It depends on what you are trying to grow. Lettuce doesn't appreciate the warmth, the time to use the cloches for growing cool weather crops is probably past for you but for Spooks and me, we still have to deal with frosty nights. If it gets really toasty (>25C) then I would try to cajole hubby into removing the cloches during the afternoon, from 11ish to about 6. The sun's rays aren't as direct as they are during the height of summer but airflow and possible fungal involvement with the humidity could be a more pressing issue.

We need some sun and warmer temps here. I'm going to start the sunflowers inside pretty soon.

How are your sunflower seedlings doing? Found 4 different kinds, quite a few hollyhocks and some Texas Blue Bonnet seeds (blue lupines), going to start them indoors this week.good.gifgood.gifgood.gif

Awesome. Been busy but this last weekend I planted two rose bushes to feel a gaping hole I had. I took pictures and will try to download them later and post a few. And I bought a new gas grill. Have a picture of it also. Should have taken pics of the wife whining about it all.star_smile.gif
