How long after you arrived did you get your green card and social security number? My 18 yr old daughter wants to get a job and go to night classes as soon as possible but I thought she had to wait for these and they could take up to 90 days?

The stamp in her passport acts as a temporary green card for 1 year she can use this to work and go to school. She would then update her employee / student file with a copy of the green card when it arrived.

Yep with the stamp in the passport,she is good to go.

SSN: if no SSN after 10-14 BUSINESS days, Head down to ur local SSN office and inquire about its status. Its best to download a copy (http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/) fil it out, have ID (passport, birth cert) as its a good chance ur not in the system and they will want to apply again--you then simply hand over your already filled out form! I had my SSN card 1 week after I applied.

Yep with the stamp in the passport,she is good to go.

Slight correction, the visa in the passport with a CBP entry stamp on the page next to it is what serves as a temporary green card until the actual green card arrives.

At the bottom of an immigrant visa, there is the notation that reads "upon endorsement, serves as temporary I-551 valid for one year" and that 'endorsement' is an entry stamp with the visa type and A number written in by a CBP officer.

Echo what the others have said.

Not that it really presents too much of an issue....but how long it takes to get the actual GC varies greatly. I got mine a week after POE through LAX. Another VJ member I know that entered the same day (via Atlanta I think) took about 2weeks. Others that I know took 3mths or more. Don't know why it is such a hit and miss thing.

And about the SSN....I never got mine even though I ticked yes for them to assign me one. Got sick of waiting after a month so went in and applied for it myself and had it a week later.

We ticked the little box and both SSN and GC arrived in the mail about a week after POE.
