Usually Canadians don't have to to take a driving test, but every states requirements are different. Google for your local Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) website.

You can expect to receive your EAD/AP combo card approximately 3 months after application. AOS is currently about 6 months.

POE estimates depends on location and time of day, you can read reviews of every POE here. It's pretty painless. Be sure they give you an I-94 (little white 2x2 card they staple in your passport, you will need it for AOS)

Depends if you are in an airport or by car. But usually, no they don't look at your belongings any more than customs usually do.

US citizen since April 2016

ROC completed April 2014

AOS from K1 completed February 2012

- I didn't have to take a driving test again, but it depends on your state. I moved to Florida where they will exchange your license if you surrender your Canadian license or you can take the driving test and keep your Canadian license as well as get a Florida one. Again, this depends on what state you're going to.

- I was approved for advanced parole and got my card (it is a combined EAD/AP card) this past Saturday. I filed in late January. It took about two months. My EAD has an error on it so I'm waiting to hear about it, but two to three months is a safe estimate. If your case is straightforward you should get AP pretty quickly.

- It took about thirty minutes for the actual POE, waiting in line to get to the customs desk took about ten minutes. I POE'd in Calgary at the airport. Your wait might vary so give yourself plenty of time to make your flight. Generally, if your paperwork is in order and your case is straightforward then it won't take much time at all.

- I had to leave my belongings in a designated area while I filled out paperwork for POE so I'm not sure whether or not they looked at it or inspected it, but when I got back everything was in the exact placement I left it.

I haven't switched mine over yet, so I am not sure. (need to get to the SSA to change my name in my SSN first).

I sold my car before moving.

I got my Advanced parole 2 months after applying for it. Never got a chance to use it as my AOS was approved one month later (no interview!)

My POE took 3 hours. I crossed on land at the Peace Bridge. DO NOT cross on a Saturday or Sunday. Thwy said it takes longer on weekends. (The one guy was actually really rude about it...He was like, Immigrating on a weekend? Are you crazy???)

I had a list of my belongings. They didn't look at my list, or even at the stuff I packed.

Some random questions, that may have been asked before..... (moving from Canada to the US)

-do I need to take a driving test again, or do they switch my license?

Depends on where you are moving to. States close to the border and states frequented by Canadians are more likely to do a license switch. Others will require varying degrees of re-testing. Georgia requires everything redone from the written, the eye test and the driving test.

-should I put my vehicle in his name for insurance purposes?

You need to import your vehicle properly. Ownership will be required in order to register it in the US. You are allowed to bring the car in duty free. He is not. Many US states also charge a tax on the price of the vehicle when you plate it. You will probably need a valid driver's license to plate it, so you may need to transfer the ownership to him after you import it. Have your fiance check with his insurer and find out what they will need to add you to his insurance and add your car to his insurance. Insurance in the US is different than in Canada. Make sure you get your SSN as soon as you can because most states require a SSN before they issue a DL and you have to have valid status in the US to get a SSN so once the I-94 expires, you would need to wait until you get an EAD or your green card.

-has anyone been approved for advanced parole recently.... about how long did it take?

I haven't seen anyone not approved for AP after entering on a K-1. Generally APs come through 60 to 80 days after the AOS application with the I-131 included is filed.

-about how long does POE usually take(it said expect about an hour)

It will depend on the POE. Some are very experienced at doing K-1s and some are not. It will also depend on how busy the POE is when you arrive. The process is quick - usually about 30 minutes, but the waiting time can vary significantly

-do they usually remove all of your belongings to look through, should I have a list?

Yes, you should have a list prepared of what you are bringing. If you have boxes, you don't need to itemize all of the contents but can make a general statement such as 'kitchen ware' 'books' ' music' etc. Again, I have heard of only a handful of people ever having their vehicles and belongings searched or even checked. Be prepared for them to search, but I doubt it will happen.

-to the parents who have moved- how did you feel your children were received by the American students??

Good luck.. I hope you have an easy POE.
