Can someone please help me clarify what documents I need to get ahold of? In the American Consulate in Ecuador, during our K1 interview, they kept my fiancee's original birth certificate along with all the other documents. I had a color printed photo copy to give them and asked them to let me have the original back, but they refused and told me that they send all of the documents to the U.S. for the next step. I have been told by a fellow VisaJourney member that I need ANOTHER original in my possession when we get to our AOS interview. Is that true? Or will the color photocopy be sufficient, since ICE is allegedly getting the original sent to them by the Consulate.

You need another original. At the interview they look at the original and take another copy. Try getting it now before your interview.

04/29/2009 - Interviewed. I- 130 approved, I-485 pending IO's review
05/05/2009 - Received NOA2. Welcome letter for Permanent Residency. I-130 and I-485 approved 04/30/2009
05/08/2009 - Touched. I-485 approval letter sent
05/11/2009 - GC received in the mail. Expires 2019
05/11/2009 - Applied to remove restrictions on my SS Card
05/18/2009 - Received unrestricted SS card
10/13/2009 - My darling husband of 2 yrs 5 months 3 weeks 3 days passed away :(

I was afraid you would say that. Is there anybody out there who thinks we can get through AOS with just a copy of the birth certificate? She's still in her country, it's possible for her to get another original, but it's reallly difficult.

Any other thoughts?

If it is possible, go and get it. Prepare and bring with you during your interview.. Its also advantageous because she is still in her country, its easier... Goodluck! ;-)

If she's going to get one additional copy, she should get two or even three. Official documents like this come in very handy when we least expect it, si man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I agree! Go get more copies!!! My husband got 4 or 5 when he went the first time and it's just handy to have them. You'll have to use them for plenty of things once she gets here so the stress that it takes to get them there now will save you SO MUCH stress once she's here. Good luck!

Lol, that made me laugh! Whether anyone else thinks it can be done or not doesn't change the fact that in the US you will be asked to produce originals at interview. If you don't have an interview, then it wont be a problem, but you will have no idea until it happens.
