Hello,

I'm sure I am over thinking things now that my package was sent off, but I have a friend who reached out to me who used a lawyer and she said that she had to request her "long version" of her birth certificate form Canada. I sent the only version I have-the card version.

Does anyone know if this is ok?

Thanks!

no, short version is not ok. They will ask you to get a long version.. I did, knowing this would come up. You can get one mailed to you, apply online. Very easy very fast. 23 dollars if i remember. Took about a week to get to me.

My other issue was proper divorce "certificate" not the paperwork final decree. So I had to mail away for that one too. So stupid, comes and I look at it, and its like an award I should frame and put in my office. HAHAHA :rofl:

LOL alright thank you.

I'm going to request it today anyway, but should I wait for the RFE, or send it as an addendum to my package to be proactive?

Hello there fellow Canadian. (I'm living on west coast, Vancouver).

Haven't received package #2 yet, but from what I understand, the 'Long Version' of your birth certificate is required. This version has both of your parents names on it. I sent away for a copy, as I didn't have one. It cost $35, and I did it online. (Ontario website).

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers

Yes you do need the long form. I was living in New Zealand but born in Canada, so I ordered it online from there. Go ahead and order it, and wait for the RFE. I'm leery about sending things to "add" to petitions. There's always the question of will it end up with your petition, or having not been requested, will it get misplaced. At least if you order it, and have it at hand, you can send it in right away when they ask for it.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

I would suggest waiting for a "maybe" RFE. It is too "iffy" sending in a document to USCIS. I liken to something similar to finding and matching up two needles in a haystack.

Good luck.

Thanks. I feel like such an idiot for not double checking this. The instructions on the I-485 says birth certificate is required, but didn't say the long version :( it made me feel silly because I thought I didn't miss anything...Almost regretted not using a lawyer.

Almost works for me lol..we had one of those, and he was completely useless. We quit using him once he sent us our NOA2, which we needed. We have done the rest on our own.

Thanks for the reassurance. My friend (who is using a lawyer) looked over my package yesterday and brought the BC situation up to me. I did some research and she was right. Grrrr....

What province were you born in? If Ontario https://www.orgforms.gov.on.ca/eForms/start.do?lang=en is the website you can go to request your long-form BC. It cost me under $50 and they had it to me in less than 4 days. It can take longer if you cannot remember all the requested information, but they normally have a 10-day guarantee on delivery.

I was born in Ontario- requested yesterday! I didn't want to wait on it. I knew the basics- my parents Info and my weight and the hospital. Hopefully I will get it quickly. Thanks for the advice!

I just got my long form on Friday. It came by Canpar courier, so you will need to be at home to sign for it. What does yours look like to people who received theirs already. Mine just looks like a sealed copy of a microfiche picture on legal sized paper. It's all done in my mothers handwriting. Is this what everyone else received? It just doesn't seem as official as the american long form birth certificate that my fiance had copied for the initial K-1 application.
