Passport related questions about traveling with baby to the UK

Hi Everyone,

I am a permanent resident in the US, and will be traveling to the UK (home country) with my daughter who was born in the US. I will be traveling without my husband (USC) and just wanted to ask a few questions as I am unsure about a few things.

1) My daughter will use her US passport to depart the US and enter the US, however, is it necessary that she has a UK passport to enter the UK and leave the UK or will a US passport be okay? I have heard that she should travel into/out of the UK on a british passport as she has automatic citizenship through me, however, I have not yet been able to find anything to confirm this.

2) My passport is still in my maiden name and my GC in my married name. I have traveled out of the country recently and just taken my marriage certificate with me to confirm the name change, however, I am wondering if this is okay when traveling with my daughter when her passport will have a different name than what I have in my passport. I will already be traveling with a notarized letter from my husband to state that he knows I am traveling with her. My concern is that I will have problems at UK border control traveling with my passport in my maiden name (even though I will have proof of name change/marriage etc).

Any advice or personal experience would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I'm an LPR and also have a daughter born here in the US. At the moment we only have her US passport. I'm going to get her a UK one eventually but waiting till our budget is a bit easier!

I've flown to the UK with her 3 times now using just the US passport to enter the UK. You have to fill out a landing card for her but apart from that it should be fine. I've had a letter from my husband with me each time giving his permission but noone has ever asked to see it, on the US nor the UK side.

Re your name change issues. Do you have time to just get a new passport in your married name? It would make things easier. However if you've managed to travel in the past with your marriage cert I don't see why that wouldn't work this time. It's basically establishing your identity. If it were me I'd get a new passport as it's enough hassle travelling with an infant without worrying about your documents.
