My wife needs to get her French Birth Certificate translated. If her mom (from Canada) does the translation, can she simply scan the signed and dated translation and e-mail it to us? Or must she send the original copy by mail?

So it is not a problem if the person doing the translations is directly involved/related to the situation? Is her mom a certified translator? I am fluent in Spanish, but I thought it would be a problem if i translated my fiancees documents because of conflict of interest?

The instructions on the I-130 state that translations must be accompanied by a certification that the document is complete and correct as well as the translators certification that he/she is competent to translate the foreign language into English.

I have a degree in Modern Languages (Spanish, ASL, German) and a Masters in Spanish Ed. Would this be enough to certify me, or do I need to have a professional translation certification?? It would really save us a TON of money (ALL our proof of bonafide marriage is in Spanish, emails, bills, etc and would have to be translated)

Awesome One more question: On the back of her Birth Certificate there's a bit of writing. Does that mean the translation completed by her mom must be double sided as well?

jessica: Anyone can translate your birth certificate as long as they are fluent in both English and your language. On the USCIS site it says:

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Signature_________________________________

Date Typed Name

Address

I believe you can do the same for anything else. As long as you include that 'certification by translator' bit you should be fine. Be sure to add it below what's been translated or on a separate sheet.

I don't think they'd question you. You just have to qualify. So as long as your truthful and they don't catch you in a lie, there should be no problems.
