Hi, all. I have a question and I can't find any other forum to ask it, so I am just going to hope someone here can help me out. A relative of mine in Mexico recently applied for a job offer he found online as a programmer. Within a couple of weeks he was interviewed by phone and was informed he had a job and was sent a list of documents he needed to send back to begin processing a TN visa, as well as a very detailed profile he needed to fill out. The salary he was offered seemed high enough to me as to raise a red flag and after trying to research the company I can't find anything on it, other than they retail in electronics and are based in Singapore (even though the job offer was from a "leading software company" all I find is retail). All of this makes me think it is a scam. Is there any kind of phone number where I can check legitimate jobs or companies? Maybe the better business bureau or a government agency? I know next to nothing about work visas so any help would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, VJ friends.

So your friend, who lives in Mexico, applied for a job in the USA, but the only thing you can find about the company is that they are Singapore based? Where would he work? If he was given a US address where he'd be based, google it, on street view and also just the address. You could also contact the Chamber of Commerce of the US city where the company claims to be and enquire about the company.

As they are offering to sponsor him for a work visa, he could ask them some pointed questions about the visa to see if they know what they are talking about: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1274.html. Ultimately, if it is too good to be true, it probably isn't true.

They have offices in Michigan, but thank you so much for the Chamber of Commerce suggestion. The job would be in Detroit, I think, but it does sound too good to be true, and ultimately I am just trying to help out a relative from getting scammed. I'll send along your reply. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions! I have pass them along to my MX relative, and even he agrees this sounds too dodgy to be true. I love VJ. We are here for each other in the most wonderful of ways.

Why would he be scammed?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
