Yes, you can do it with an EAD, however the social security card will bear the endorsement "Valid for work only with DHS authorisation". You can have this annotation removed by showing the SSA your green card (once you have it, obviously) although you don't have to. Your green card serves as perfectly adequate "authorisation" by itself.

yeah i had that this far as i had my ssn from the f1 cpt days. i just ddnt want the stinking dhs stamp on there so i went and got one without that.

04/2014 - Eligible for ROC

06/2014 - I-751 package filing joint with spouse sent

04/2015 - Eligible for Citizenship

I wish I knew I could file for a SSN with an EAD. I only filed for AP, since I figured it'll only take me 3 months

to get my GC.

Perhaps!

And Shooli, you could apply for an EAD now (for free) by enclosing a copy of your I-485 NOA with the application, but it will still be a three month wait for it. By that point you will probably have your green card already.

wow, it's getting tense in here :( I'm so sorry you guys are still waiting. Hypnos, this is ridiculous. At least your experience informs us about the procedure in a situation like yours. Who knows when we're going to have to advise someone. Shooli, wow. What the ... is up with your case...

On a relatively happier note, my online status finally changed. It now says I have been approved and my card would be issued in, wait for it, the next 60 days. I mean, after 30 days we might as well call them months, right? :D So basically, it took 3ish months for the process and in the worst case, 3 more months to receive a card. I'm having a laugh out here. Hypnos, go get your ssn man. You can't all be that bothered by that temp stamp on your shiny new card. We're probably never going to look at this ssn card ever again. I know I won't.

Apr. 28 - RFE notice arrived in the mail
Apr. 30 - Responded to RFE
May 3 - Online status changed to "Request for Evidence Response Review"
May 9 - Successful early walk-in biometrics in Milwaukee
June 5 - Online status changed to "Testing and Interview" - Interview date: July 11. Online interview location: NBC
June 6 - EAD/AP card in production; NOA 2 in the mail. Interview location: local office
June 12 - EAD/AP picked up by USPS
June 14 - EAD/AP in the mail
June 15 - applied for a SSN
June 22 - got SSN
July 11 - Interview - approved on the spot!
August 8 - online status changes to approval. GC should arrive in "up to 60 days". Yah, we're out of plastic in Wisco.

June 3 - filed for ROC

June 25 - NOA1

Sometime mid July - the letter for biometrics came in, while I was abroad; I pushed the date back to August

Sometime in August - biometrics on the right day, didn't go for early

August 25 - RFE, deadline Nov 14

Nov 10 - sent out RFE response

Nov 19 - card ordered, no interview

Nov 30 - green card arrived
