Has ANYONE filed single on 2011 tax returns and gone to the interview?

Calling the IRS for tax advice is like calling USCIS for immigration advice

You will be fine filing single even married and the spouse is abroad it doesn't matter because my wife file single after our marriage and i still use it to the embassy no problem.

I filed Head of Household. I followed the IRS, and said he is non-resident alien, never been here, no income. Per the IRS, I was fine filing head of household. However, I do have children I claim as dependents. Donno if that makes a difference. And from what I understand, Head of Household is not necessarily filing single. I would not have checked the single box. Go online, or talk to the irs. We can all give you advice, but that is all it is. Ask a professional.

yes definitely makes a difference, talked to them today, and since i don't have any dependents (they actually asked me if i had kids that used to live with me, live with me now, have been kidnapped or died before december 31, 2011, i was like, excuse me????) so anyway, yeah, that doesn't apply to me, but thank you. i'll be amending it to married filing separately and putting NRA (non resident alien) where the SSN should go. don't really think it makes a difference, but just in case my husbands CO is a stickler

I am glad you called them. Making an amended tax return should be simple. Then just request new copies, and you are good!

Wrong. There are plenty of tax professionals at the IRS they just don't necessarily work in the division that handles telephone inquiries.

this is exactly... wrong hehe, the person above is right, after holding for 45 minutes i talked to the lady who answers calls, for once, i got someone not just doing the daily grind, she sympathized and said that she used to do this kind of stuff, but couldn't remember, she then said she would transfer me to a specialist who was worth the additional 20 minute wait as she asked some specific questions and told me exactly what to do!

i guess you just have to know what to ask for

since yer living with yer huaband in spain - i say take the plunge, file a 1040X with a W-7.

in spain we would cal you darnellito! silly, i'm not living with my hubby, i am in Ohio he is in Spain, we have never lived together, i wish i were living in spain, cuz i would have done DCF so fast my head would still be spinnning :-) i'm delirious from writing a paper, good nite

then save the forms, email to him.

he signs them, attaches the right id stuff for the w-7, sends it all back to you via courier or postal mail.

then YOU SIGN , and send off to Austin

don't forget the election letter ..

you two not have to live together to benefit from married-filing-jointly with an ITIN application, at all.

darnell, i'm curious as to why you are so intent on the MFJ? why is my choice to file married filing separately not sufficient??? it's much simpler and it alleviates including his income, there is no need for ITIN in my opinion no?? this is the tax bracket they put me into, MFS...
