My wife is 3 months pregnant with our first child.

We do not know the sex yet and last night we talked about naming the kid.

She wants an American first name and I want a Viet first name with an American nickname.

I was wondering what nationality name would you name your kid and why?

This question is more for the VK people.

I picked American for first and VNese for middle so he can have both.

Pick something similar for the first and second..we named our son Kayden Khang Le

Like my wife, yours may want to use 2-words name for the first name. I persuaded her against it  and keep it simple with first, middle and last.

Have fun decide on the name, mine prolonged to the few last month..I heard some didn't even have a name when they get to the hospital.

Congratz...

it came down to a couple factors for me...which nationality (VN or USA) i identify with more and just the ease of having an american name in the USA.

in the end since my son was born in Vietnam i gave him a VN name...Bao. As a matter of fact he still carries his mother's surname. I'll change his name completely to include his American name when we have time, something like Jackson Bao Nguyen...should be easy enough.

p.s. i'm on the other side when choosing US/VN names that sound alike...seems redundant but that's just me.

Though this isn't my country I thought I'd offer my opinion as my sister is currently going through this (similar but not exactly the same :D).

My sister is currently looking at naming her child Isabelle however she wants to use the different spelling involving her husband lineage "Isabel" so this is a point of contention for them at the moment.

Unfortunately a lot of parents don't think about how a name will affect a child for the rest of their life. My brothers has 3 names (one first 2 middle - same as my dad). He was named after my father and was ALWAYS supposed to be known as his second name (the only different name but same initial as dad). Unfortunately his high school buggered up the paperwork and started putting his first (and VERY traditional) name on the roll call. So now all his friends know him by his first name (he was teased for a while about it) but we (his family) all call him by his "nickname"/middle name. So while you might WANT him to be known by an American "nickname" it's likely he'll end up in the same sort of situation that my brother found himself in at some stage of his life.

Another example - my husbands friends have very.. embarrassing last names. Eugene is one and he HATES it. I can't remember the other one 'cause he hides it so well. I knew a guy called Wayne Kerr (sounds like "wanker").

As someone with an odd last name (now and even worse growing up), I am used to spelling my name CONSTANTLY and I admit I don't like it. Even with "Vanessa" I am often forced to spell it (Vannesa, Vanesa, Venesa.. you name it I've seen it :S) so think about how the name will affect your child as s/he grows.

I think the idea of American first and Viet middle is a good one.. or maybe a combination of the two or a more "americanised" version of a Viet name or something. For instance I am named after my grandmother "Agnes" (Scottish) whose nickname was "Nessie" and "Ness" is a nickname for Vanessa. That's how I got my name. I'm not even pregnant but I think about this every time I hear a name "Oooo would that be good for our kids?" lol. It's such a hard and important task I figure I need a couple of years to decide :P My sister has had her "boy and girl" names for several years (and we are forbidden from using either :D).

It seems that most Viet Kieu prefer European first names and Vietnamese middle names.

Kids can be cruel. My brothers' names are Dong and Dung. It wasn't easy being the immigrantkids with those names. They had to adopt European names to deal with their situations.

A European first name will make it easier for your child; especially around other children.

A friend of mine named her son Kenichi. They use Ken as his nickname.

+1 for kids being cruel.

I gave mine strong English names as first names with nice Vietnamese names as middle names. I refer to them with ether names interchangeably so they're used to both.

If they want to use their Vietnamese name when they grow up that's perfectly fine. I notice a lot of successful younger Vietnamese people are going back to their roots and use their Vietnamese names because they're more comfortable in their own skin than us older people.

There are a whole lot of fully Vietnamese names in Hollywood movie credits nowadays too.

The reverse is true, as well. Every American who has spoken my wife's name without first learning how to pronounce it has pronounced it "Fong". My step-daughter's name is "Ngoc", but everyone who doesn't know how to pronounce it says "Nok". It's easy to screw up Vietnamese if you try to pronounce the words by applying English spelling rules to them.

I thought about my kid getting picked on in school if I gave him or her a Viet first name.

That's why I was going to add an American middle name.

I like our culture and names so I am going to try my boy Viet name first.

We agree if it's a girl, she will have an American first name and viet middle name.

I didn't realize that when you married, it's 70/30 compromise...lol. Women are good at negotiations!

Thu loves the names David and Victoria. For a girl, I would like Samantha. For a boy, I would prefer the name Gohan because to me it sounds very unique yet simple.
