Mutant Heat Wave Shattering Records

More than 2,200 warm temperature records have been set so far in March. Take a look at the map above to see where temps are crazy departures from normal.

This isn't your average heat wave. Its duration, set against more than a century of record keeping, makes it one for the climate change chronicles. Here's what some meteorologists are saying:

From the National Weather Service in Chicago:

Chicago and Rockford have now both broken high temperature records 5 days in a row. There is even the potential they could tie or break record highs for up to an unbelievable 8 days in a row depending on how warm temperatures get Monday through Wednesday. It is extraordinarily rare for climate locations with 100+ year long periods of records to break records day after day after day.

The ongoing March heat wave in the Midwest is one of the most extreme heat events in US history. With so many records being shattered, it is difficult to cover in detail just how widespread, long-lasting, and extreme the event is.

According to the CapitalClimate blog (HT Climate Central) warm weather records this month are outpacing cold records by a whopping 19-to-1.

So much better than last years cold wave and crazy amount of snow, over 8 feet here in the valley (which was NOT global warming, just a "weather event" as I recall)

I already took the snow tires off the cars and we are going skeet shooting tomorrow, and rifle shooting outside. So much better than the indoor range.

Also because we did not have the huge snowmelt of last year's "non global warming weather event" thousands of homes were not flooded, the marinas are putting boats in the lake, golf courses are open, roads are not closed due to flooding. Heating bills were low, I did not shovel even one time, I did not have to hire a front end loader to move snow two times like last year, weather related deaths are WAY down for this year.

We had NO seasonal layoffs in construction, this makes the unemployment numbers look better. My bonuses are over the top! We are SO far ahead. I LOVE those contracts where I get bonuses for early completion! We are already into May, and in some cases June, work already! The extra money is making for great birthday gifts for the boys and helping the local economy.

This is SO great! Can we do it every year???????????

Oh and skiing was great this year, though only 5 feet of snow piled up in the mountains instead of 12 feet but who knew, actually? We rarely go skiing after St Patty's day anyway, sick of skiing...time to go fishing and skeet shooting!

I love the Climate Change nuts who ignore the flow of the jet streams, how they change over time, etc...

While areas who don't normally have warm weather/tornadoes this early, there are other area who don't normally have cold weather/get pounded on with snow...

I'm sure there will be some excuse Steven can come up with that will blame everything on your Ford F-150 though...

This is a weather event. This does not prove global warming any more than big snowfalls last year or the European cold snap this winter disproves it! Those who even bring these things up prove at the outset they don't have even the beginning of an understanding on this issue!

We are finally getting some rain, and not having to deal with the major landslides that were plaguing us over the last few years. Maybe we will finally get a decent tourist season this year without having visitors contend with one-way traffic controls all spring and summer like the last two years.

No, didn't say that! The only proof of global warming is by seeing AVERAGE global temperatures rising from year to year. And that is happening. But the temperature rise so far is still only a degree or two, nothing all that dramatic but nonetheless still quite significant in what it portends for the future.
