My fiance is Syrian but our interview was in Amman because Damascus is shut down. Here's our timeline:

First week of September 2011: Obtained all paperwork from government offices in Damascus for interview

9/18/2011: Medical Exam done in Amman

9/25/2011: K1 interview in Amman -- result: need more tax docs and military status paper

10/10/2011: All tax docs sent

11/14/2011: Received 221(g) letter stating that we are in AP and to send military status paper and passport when the case is updated online

2/6/2012: Received email from the embassy stating that military status paper was never received. Sent paper two days later.

3/20/2012: Received email from the embassy stating:

Kindly note that your fiancé need to send us the following via Aramex for visa processing:

- Syrian police certificate(the one we have expired).

- New medical exam (the one we have expired).

- Civil status certificate (recently issued).

- His passport

Regards,

American Embassy

Amman - Jordan

ALL OF THESE DOCUMENTS WERE CURRENT AT THE TIME OF THE INTERVIEW! They are the ones who put us in AP for all these months and sat around while the documents expired!!! Now in Damascus, car bombs are going off in front of the government offices (one one Sunday happened at the same office where he needs to get the police certificate). It will be almost impossible and SO unsafe to get these papers!

I emailed the embassy within an hour of getting the email and I asked them if they REALLY need all of these papers again and indicating how horribly dangerous it is for my fiance to go to these offices. I am waiting for an answer now. I am also going to try to call the embassy today (even though they never let me talk to anyone) and the DoS visa line.

Has anyone experienced this?! The embassy puts you in AP and then they say your documents are expired?! WHAT CAN I DO?!

Sounds like you should get them what they are asking for it sounds like they are ready to issue his visa... and yes many ppl here from pakistan also have to get updated medical and pcc and of course a new ds230... usually its just medical and pcc those expire after 1 yr and in other places 6 months

they only ask for updated passport if its close to expiring and won't leave 6 valid months after visa is issued...

My suggestion is to get that to them ASAP and then enjoy and wait for the visa to be issued!!!! Congrats!

Thanks for the encouraging words!! I certainly hope that you both are right!!

They're also telling us that our medical exam cannot be done in Syria. Our original was done in Amman, but since that time, the embassy in Damascus said that all applicants being processed in Amman could have their medical exams done in Syria, due to the security situation. When the Damascus embassy closed down, all of this information was taken off their website. Now, the embassy in Amman is requiring that my fiance go BACK to Amman for his second medical exam. Is it true that the medical exam needs to be done in the country from which the visa will be issued? I want the visa NOW but I don't want my fiance to have to cross through the border town where people are being slaughtered in the streets. It seems completely unreasonable that a board certified/embassy approved physician in Syria wouldn't be able to do the medical. Any experience with this?
