I did the drive, once, all by myself, all in one day.

And after that experience, Craig AND my parents have asked me to never do it again.

The north woods of Minnesota can get pretty scary with no guard rails and no cell service!

Anyways, yes, I wish I COULD drive there easily.

I paid for the expedited passport processing and I think it took about 8 days.

From the Canada side of things you will need proof of your American citizenship to enter the country - either a passport or a birth certificate. You will actually require it to board the plane as they won't risk the fines they incur for transporting an alien who is turned away at the border.

The requirement for a Canadian to have a passport to enter the US has also been extended - for 18 months I believe. I will see if i can find the link again.

All of which does not answer the question (admittedly not posed by the OP) on whether both (Canuck and Yank) passports would be needed by dual-nationals.

On Yank + Canadian passports. The answer is Yes and No. You are suposed to present yourself as an American when entering the US. And as a Canadian when entering Canada. If You need a passport to enter both countries yet only have a US passport, when entering Canada you could give them your US passport and your Canadian citizenship card if you want. But why create the confusion? Canada would probably be more ok with it than say presenting the US a Canadian passport and a Naturalization certificate lol.. youll probably get a long staredown.

A friend did it and it took 10 days.

If you really want something sent fast use Fed-ex of UPS. The Post office can take their sweet time to send things 'overnight'. The same friend above sent some concert tickets 'overnight' with the USPS and they took a week to arrive. Too bad the concert was in 6 days

Cmartyn has it right: You use your Canadian passport to enter Canada and your American passport to enter the US.

Incidentally the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative is not being implemented 'continent' wide - it is a US iniative only for all of those who live in the western hemisphere and previously were able to enter the US using only birth certificates as proof of Canadian citizenship - not sure what was required for Mexico. It is currently unilateral and there are no plans currently in the works for Canada to implement the same criteria. As well, US recently decided to delay the implementation of the land and sea border crossings to require passports or approved documents for an additional 18 monthsuntil 2009 because there has been no work done yet on those other 'approved documents'. Those arriving by air will still be required to present passports by January 8, 2007. I know that the Carribean is especially upset about the new US regulations as they expect a drastic drop in tourism - those Americans without passports will choose to stay home rather than obtain the documents.

If worst comes to worst, you should be able to get a certified copy of your birth certificate. Call the city clerk's office ahead and ask.
