By KIRIT RADIA and RYM MOMTAZ | ABC News – 10 hrs ago

A Russian military unit has arrived in Syria, according to Russian news reports, a development that a United Nations Security Council source told ABC News was "a bomb" certain to have serious repercussions.

Russia, one of President Bashar al-Assad's strongest allies despite international condemnation of the government's violent crackdown on the country's uprising, has repeatedly blocked the United Nations Security Council's attempts to halt the violence, accusing the U.S. and its allies of trying to start another war.

Now the Russian Black Sea fleet's Iman tanker has arrived in the Syrian port of Tartus on the Mediterranean Sea with an anti-terror squad from the Russian Marines aboard according to the Interfax news agency. The Assad government has insisted it is fighting a terrorist insurgency.

The Iman replaced another Russian ship "which had been sent to Syria for demonstrating (sic) the Russian presence in the turbulent region and possible evaluation of Russian citizens," the Black Sea Fleet told Interfax.

RIA Novosti, a news outlet with strong ties to the Kremlin, trumpeted the news in a banner headline that appeared only on its Arabic language website. The Russian embassy to the US and to the UN had no comment, saying they have "no particular information on" the arrival of a Russian anti-terrorism squad to Syria.

Moscow has long enjoyed a cozy relationship with the Assad regime, to which it sells billions of dollars of weapons. In return Russia has maintained a Navy base at Tartus, which gives it access to the Mediterranean.

Last week Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia had no plans to send troops to Syria.

"As for the question whether I consider it necessary to confront the United States in Syria and ensure our military presence there… in order to take part in military actions -- no. I believe this would be against Russia's national interests," Lavrov told lawmakers, according to RIA Novosti.

Russia's Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov denied reports that Russian special forces were operating inside Syria. He did say, however, that there are Russian military and technical advisors in the country.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said the U.S. government had not heard of the reports of Russian troops in Syria and declined to comment.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

It's going to be awesome when the Russians are on one side and we're on the other.

And by "awesome" I mean horrific.

I don't see the US and Russia going at it anytime soon. The US was a big fat zero a few years ago with the Georgia conflict.

You might want to talk to Condi about that one. There was a lot more going on than most folks know about.

Obama snoozes, we lose. If he had done a decent job for the last four years and did not have to invent "Republican War on Women" to distract the voters from his failures and if he did something besides campaign to keep his job and go on vacation, this would not happen.

Why is it his fault?

It is George Bush's fault? Obama has done nothing to stop the massacre of Muslims in Syria, in fact judging from the Muslims he kills without trial I would say he probably likes what is happening to innocent peace loving Muslims in Syria. Maybe the Russians will help them. I bet Obomber is not so eager to do drone attacks on Russians, what do you think?

Hopefully Obomaer will not piss off the Russians, since he shut down our shuttle program we may need to be hitching rides from them to the space station

The US just recently rented a Russian air base for the Afhgan fiasco. Blame the EU though for not putting Russia in a cage. They had the chance to get Georgia into NATO and the Germans being Germans balked on the idea for the fact they are dependent on Russia's gas. The only way to deal with Russia is through force. That country respects force and pure brutality but it doesn't respect anyone who caves in on negotiations. If I had my way that country would be split into thirds.

Best thing the US can do atm is build that missile shield in Europe and build it now.

Logic would dictate that the one conducting the violence in Syria is at fault.
