He will need to show proof of current income, either an employment letter or paystubs. http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=b70f8875d714d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=7d316c0b4c3bf110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD

Also, please note that W2s are a part of the tax return - you need a complete tax return which includes the W2s, and any schedules and extra forms submitted to the IRS.

oh ok-that helps, forgive me, but I don't have to request anything official from the IRS if we have what was submitted to them on hand, correct?

If you have every part of your complete tax return, then yes, you can submit that. The problem is most people don't know what a complete tax return looks like (they just send the 1040 or just send the W2s or something). If you're sure it's everything, then more power to you :)

I sure hope it's everything! :) his accountant gives him a package of what is submitted-1040, "schedule a's" itemized deduction worksheets...I can include copies of W2s too...I hope its everything they need...if they want it all, they can have it :) LOL. Should I send more than one year?

This is my least favorite form.

I had complete tax returns and pay stubs from last 6 months, no employment letter (my wife did not feel like going and asking for it :) ) - got approved in 2 months from filing.

camo - complete tax return is 1040, W2 and all 1099s if applicable. Tax transcript is much easier to do.

A complete tax return differs for every person, so we can't tell you exactly what it is. It includes 1040, and any W2s, 1099s, schedules, and extra forms that are required for the individual's circumstances when they file taxes.

It varies dramatically, depending on the taxpayer.

Some taxpayers do not have dependents, and do not claim itemized deductions, and have income only from wages or tips. These people can file a 1040EZ form, which is basically a small card. A copy of their tax return would consist of a copy of the 1040EZ form they submitted to the IRS and a copy of the W2 they received from their employer.

Some taxpayers have a much more complicated tax return. They claim itemized deductions because it saves them more money than the standard deductions would, so they file a 1040 form along with a schedule A form for the deductions. If they have income from interest and/or dividends then they'll also fill out a schedule B. If they have income or losses from investments then they'd fill out a schedule D. If they have any self-employment income then they'd add a schedule C. They'd include a copy of their W2 (if they got one). They might also need to include a copy of certain 1099's - for example, if they had income from gambling (lottery winnings, for example) then they'd include a copy of their 1099-G.

A complete copy of a tax return includes every form and supporting document that would be sent to the IRS if the return were being filed on paper. Most people don't file paper returns anymore. They file electronically. However, even if someone uses tax prep software to file electronically they can still print out a paper copy of the return, and the software would provide instructions for what additional documents would need to be sent to the IRS along with the printed forms.

An IRS transcript of the return is much simpler.

It is much easier and much less complicated if you can just call the IRS, order the tax return transcript for the year that you want and wait till it arrives in mail, usually takes about 5-7 business days, mine arrived in about five. The IRS transcript contains all the information that you will ever need and is much more concise and saves you on a lot of money when you mail it out. All this is provided you have time to wait for the mail, of course.
