Check on the requirements for obtaining it, it varries from place to place. A lot of places requires both the bride and groom to be present. If not they might have requirements for IDs such as passports etc so you might have to be there in person to obtain it. If that is not the case then sure you can apply for a marriage license.

you both have to be there with i.d. and a ssn in order to apply for the license.

odd that they require a ssn.

A lot of places don't require the SSN, it is perfectly legal for non-US citizens to get married in the US and they can apply for a marriage license. But laws would differ from county to county or municipality to municiplaity.

Since we are on such a time crunch..A marriage liscence in PA is good for 90 days I believe..They ahve a 3 day wait period..Can we get the liscence now before i do POE? since we wont get married when we get the liscence?

thoughts?

3 days is 3 days - as noted above you probably have to appear in person with your id anyway so head over there the day you arrive perhaps :)

yeah, i didn't think that sounded right.

Instead of using eHow, a government website should be consulted instead. Since marriage licenses are given out by local governments, it will vary from place to place. It is best to find out where you are going to get married and look up the application procedure there. In NJ for instance, the license is issued by the bride's home municipality, after which you can get married anywhere in the state.

i posted the ehow link because every pa government link related to marriage licensing i found was dead/broken.

the ehow article is specific to pa and i also noted that the ssn number requirement sounded odd. i was just trying to help with a starting point.

if you can find the correct government website link, post it for the op.

No I get its 3 days and we both have to be present. I have to take my son down next month for hockey tryouts. I havent been able to sched an interview yet..I plan on levaing Canada the day after or asap as possible everything goes through as his insurance has a month wait time for coverage, and clock is ticking with this baby.

If I have the liscence I just dont want to mess up anything with immigration..Thats all..

depends where you live.

In Chicago, we got ours in february 2010, marriage was in april 2010 so was my POE. I did not require an SSN, just my passport. and they just used the address i'll be living at when i moved for the licence. it wont mess anything up..they will just see it as planning in advance. same with some of my wedding arrangements. which is why i stayed in Chicago the entire MONTH of February. lol :)

My husband got the license on his way home from work, when he was living in PA, I was visiting at the time. He just brought my drivers license along with him and they gave him the license, Of course they screwed up my maiden name so he had to go back and get it fixed lol. A ssn is regired and all websites will say that but you have to read it carefully...all US citizen require a ssn. You should not need to provide one as long as you clarify that you are not a citizen. However it is best to email or call the local office and just ask :)

I actually called a county office today with pretty much the same question. As others have said, the person on the phone told me you need to both be present to obtain the license and you can bring a passport showing your visa instead of a SSN. You should call the office in the county you'll be married in just to double check though.
