When my previous fiancee came to the US on a K-1 visa she was 6 1/2 months pregnant at the time of the medical. She had the x-ray, but with the stomach shielding. Absolutely no problem.

You can always point out what the online requirements are and tell them absolutely not. They can then point out that their procedures absolutely require it and deny you a completed physical. Good luck trying to win that pissing match. I don't know about the DR, but the Philippines website for the medical clearly says that the x-ray will be required in ALL cases. So I could have told them "no" (I was there for the medical) which would absolutely have meant a failed physical. I could have then fought tooth and nail for them to accept what the website says. Again, that is most likely not a winnable fight.

The possibility of having problems as a result is miniscule. So minor that 10 other things your wife does today will be worse. Don't worry about it. The stress won't have any positive impact so I'd let it go.

Hello everyone,

My freak-out is over. I've read all the information, and the links from this thread. Although I wish she hadn't had it, i'm confident everything will be ok. I was very concern because this is my first child, and y'all know how parents panic over every little thing when it comes to their child. Thanks for info everyone.

I was 19 weeks pregnant when I went in for my medical in London...they said I need to get them done once I have the baby.

They also said that they go by US rules and x-rays are not necessary for K-1 so I don't see why they did this...

my husband would have not been happy either!

Well K1 is different from IR1/CR1: we don't have to file for adjustment of status, so there's no second exam once in the US. The medical done abroad is the only chance we have to complete everything.

Hello,

Ok,my wife just finished her medical and she's about 7 weeks pregnant and the dam doctors made her take x-rays even though they knew she was prenant. Has anyone else done this and what were the results.

Matt

Hey Matt,

I have a two year old and I would have been super pissed off if they did this but after reading the differeny responses to your post I have become much more educated on this subject. You can never be too cautious... We both learned something today. I have confidence that your baby will be born both happy and healthy. God bless you, your wife, and your baby.

Don't be worried! The amount of radiation that the baby would have received, even if there were no lead apron shielding, would have been extremely small. If you are not too worried to have her fly in a commercial airliner than you certainly have no basis to be worried over a screening CXR. If you still wanted no X-ray than you had the option to postpone the medical (and the visa) till after the baby is born!

yeah, she said they protected her stomach, but I didn't want her to have that.

Matt

She should be fine, then. The Baby, also.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Matt,

I have been in healthcare for 12 years and worked in "baby" intensive care units....there is more radiation exposure just by walking out to your car on a clear day than you would get from one simple chest xray. Since they shielded her stomach, rest assured that everything is ok! :)

Chastity

this is obviosly false information.

Don't want to make you panic or anything. I'm a midwife and I know is really dangerous for the baby to be x-rayed at that specific time. It could affect his/her development...even with the appropriate protection for your wife. Still can be dangerous. I will recommend you an ultrasound when she's about 11 to 12 weeks to find out if everything is OK with the baby. There are several test doctors can perform in ultrasound at that time...

Best wishes for you and your baby

I am also a midwife and disagree with this. A one off Xray doesn't place your baby at unacceptable risk, in fact she will be exposed to more radiation on the flight to the US. I am also pregnant myself and had an xray in the first trimester with a lead apron.

They make all pregnant women take the chest x-ray, it's mandatory. They should have protected her belly with a special screen, they did, right?

That is not true. I am a nurse and I can tell you that any type of x-ray to a pregnant woman could be fatal to the baby. If they want to be sure she's pregnant they should have used ultra sound,

Well, whether you like it or not, the US government makes it mandatory for pregnant immigrant visa applicants to get a chest X-Ray.

They were sure she was pregnant, and yet they did it using a protective apron, which by the way is made for it.

I know this will not come of really well, but shouldn't she have shown concern about them x-raying her while pregnant, or at least shown concern to the Embassy personnel when she saw that an x-ray was one of the things on the medical list?

When I previously accompanied my young son to have his arm x-rayed at the orthopedics or x-ray his teeth/mouth/gums at the dentist, the clinic personnel asked me if I was pregnant so I can stay very far away. I wasn't even the patient, just the accompanying mother but they made sure that 1) I was not pregnant, 2) That I did not THINK I was pregnant 3) if I was or thought I could be pregnant, that I was nowhere near the x-ray machines. But of course, I am talking about here in the USA.

Any medical personel in the world should haveknown better this really surprises me, I guess thats why when medical students from abroad come to the US to work they always need further education cos they don't know about advanced technology.

Your answer is hilarious when you know that it is THE US GOVERNMENT who demands that pregnant women have a chest x-ray inspite of their condition. Which poses no problem for one single chest x-ray with adequate protection.

X-ray is not "advanced technology", it has been used since its discovery in the 19th century by a German scientist...
