Not much joint evidence of relationship, trying to save $

Here’s my dilemma. My husband and I are both young and just trying to make ends meet. I am concerned that we may not have enough evidence of our relationship for AOS. These factors exist because we are trying to save money wherever we can.

-No lease or mortgage. We live with my brother and help out with about $300 of the mortgage. I just write a personal check to my brother every month. All of the regular utilities (except for internet) are in my brother’s name because he owns the house.

-No health insurance – I didn’t add him to my plan because I can’t afford the premiums for two people. I figure, he just had all this medical stuff done for his visa and he’s in good health. We’re both young and in our 20’s.

-No life insurance for him under my employer – Since I am the main source of income, it’s more important to insure me so that he will be okay if anything happens to me. We can’t afford to buy life insurance for two people.

-No car insurance or car loan together - I already purchased a car under my name before we got married. It’s all paid for. I’m not adding him to my car insurance yet because he has no license and cannot drive yet. This may change in the future.

We do have:

-Joint bank account

-Joint tax returns

-Joint phone bill

-Joint internet bill

-He is an authorized user on my credit cards

-He is the primary beneficiary on my life insurance & retirement

In addition to the usual photos and affidavits from friends, is there anything else that I can do to improve our evidence? Please help. Thanks.

Your list looks good =)

You could try getting the letter from your bank on the joint bank account thing. Good luck!

I agree the list should prove adequate. I am not sure what a letter from the bank would do that is not already covered by joint statements of account activity would already prove. Just my thoughts and YMMV.

YMMV

Looks to me like you have good evidence. Our AO took copies of our tax return, a couple of utility bills, and deed. But he acted like he only wanted them for his file.

He spent more time looking through our wedding album, and then didn't ask to keep any of the pictures. Do take pictures to the interview.

Believe it or not, they make more determinations by looking at the couple at the interview, how they act and interact and etc. rather than these meaningless pieces of paper. You can get a piece of paper to say whatever you want it to say, add anyone to a bill, take a picture of anything; it's just ridiculous that somehow this nonsense is "evidence of a relationship," as its really evidence of hunter-gatherer or #######-retentive or ability to deal with bureaucracy skills (you get the point). That aside, you have plenty - people have been approved with a lot less - don't worry about it!!!!!

japau,

Good post, should be required reading.

Applies to visa interviews and the never ending question 'can I visit during the process' as well.

You have more paperwork than we did. I thnk you will be fine. BTW our adjudicator, besides watching our actions and reactions, looked very closely at our paperwork so i disagree somewhat as to the degree of " . .meaningless pieces of paper" .

Good luck.

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

meh, our interviewer asked us for our ID, swore us in, asked for the most recent year tax return, the date of our marriage and stamped my passport. That was it.

I had a whole bag full of ###### to show her, she didn't want any of it. :P
