I currently have a SS saying "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT" and would like to know what i can do so i will be able to work in the US?

Get a green card or employment authorization document. If you've got a green card then go to the local Social Security office and ask for a new card without the "not valid" statement.

But at the moment i dont live in the US....and how do i go about getting a green card? doesn't someone have to sponsor me? or is it due to the fact i already have a SS# it would be easier? and how does the employment authorization document work as well...dont i have to get sponsor by a company?

Having a SS number is completely separate from being able to immigrate to the US. It has no bearing on the issuance of a visa or anything else. It is not proof of any status. How did you get that number?

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

via my dad for benefits when he used to live\work in the US.

So you would like to be able to work in US ? That only can happen if you find employer that will apply for a work visa for you or you will be able to immigrate to US through family, employer or diversity visa lottery. SSN number/card is pretty much worthless from being able to work in US standpoint - if you do not have a valid status that allows you to work.

finding a company that will sponsor you is hard.. :( also i thought having a SS# would make things easier

If you are not eligible to live/work in US, having SSN does not matter at all. Alone it is pretty much meaningless but some people actually (wrongly) believe that this is only thing necessary to be able to work in US.

Not in your case. The Social Security Administration doesn't grant immigration benefits. They issue numbers to people who are required to pay Social Security taxes, and they keep track of the Social Security taxes those people pay. That's it. You were apparently eligible to receive a Social Security number at one time. The only thing that will be easier is that you won't have to apply for a new number if you ever return to the US as an immigrant, since a Social Security number is issued for life.

A Social Security number, by itself, doesn't provide any immigration benefits nor permission to work in the United States. In order to come to the United States and work legally you either need someone to submit a petition for you, or find some other way to get an immigrant visa. From what I understand, Barbados is eligible for the diversity visa lottery. Maybe you could try that.

Get a green card or EAD. The SS card does not authorize work for anyone, not even a citizen. It is not necessary to show a SS card for employment. Your card also says "not valid for employment without DHS autorization", please be complete in your question. The green card or EAD IS the DHS authorization. VOILA! It is not ever necessary to change the SS card. Memorize the number put it in a safe palce and forget about it.

FWIW Alla is a citizen now, gainfully employed, and her card says the same thing. I lost my card in 1973 and have not had a use for it yet.

The SS card ranks among theworld's most useless documents. The NUMBER is all that matters.

VERMONT! I Reject Your Reality...and Substitute My Own!

Please be sure of your facts before saying the question was not complete. A type 2 Social Security card says "Not valid for employment" and Type 3 has "Valid for work only with DHS authorization". It sounds like the card was a type 2 card.
