I have a question to the forum

Did you get your marriage certificate Apostille?

If you did at what stage did you sent it?

Do you need it for filling the I-130?

I did not submit my marriage certificate from Colombia with an apostille to the US Govt. The I-130 instructions did not request that it be submitted with an apostille. You do need to submit a copy of your marriage certificate along with a translated copy if it is in Spanish.

Neither USCIS nor the NVC ask for an apostille on any of the civil documents you provide. At the USCIS stage, you can even send a basic photocopy, while at NVC, you'll need to send an original or a certified copy.

I know that some embassies ask for documents with apostille but it's very rare, you should look up your embassy's information page.

for me i married civil in cyprus and we did apostille it cost arround 150$

An apostille was necessary for us from the beginning of our filing of the I-130 for all our documents issued in Trinidad & Tobago (i.e. Birth certificate and marriage certificate).

We were advised (by JAG lawyers and administration at the US army) that without an apostille certifying these documents, no business could have been conducted in the USA.

Call your Ministry of Legal Affairs and your respective embassy in the USA to enquire.

Apostille is never required by USCIS, in fact they don't even need original documents nor certified copies. They are perfectly fine with regular photocopies. Getting an apostille on documents to be sent to USCIS is a total waste of money and completely useless, so you got really bad advice.

The only time apostille might be requested is at the embassy level, but it's very rare.

Thanks for your contribution Laure&Colin. However, each country's requirements are different. Thus the advice to check with the respective embassy in the USA, and the country's ministry of legal affairs as Colombia is quite close to Trinidad & Tobago. Heads up; sometimes we are considered Latin American like them, and other times; Caribbean.

I don't consider it bad advice at all, nor a waste of time, nor money, as this certification has allowed me to get my military ID.

I think that you need to respect the fact that each country is different. Not all operate on the same level as France.

P.S. I have lived in France for quite sometime and I do know how efficient they are.
