Hey, if you walked away from your childhood without hating your parents for doing it to you then I'm happy, man. That's good. My great aunt used to tie her son to a table and poke him with pins. That side of my family was quite twisted in the older generations. My mother got the slipper and spoon daily. She took all the beatings, her other two sisters got none of it. I'm very similar to my mother. If you tell me I'm doing something wrong, I want to know why and how I can fix it - don't just shut me up and beat me.

Don't get me wrong though, if anyone laid a hand on my kid I'd show up with a baseball bat. Adult to adult is a different story.

I would never condone abusing a kid, "My great aunt used to tie her son to a table and poke him with pins." Now that is not discipline tempered with love and understanding. It is unfortunate your mom got the brunt of the physical discipline, I come from a family of 8 kids, my mother had to have command-and-control, she showed no favoritism when it was time to meter out the butt whippings.

My mother and father would explain (after the smoke settled) why the need to resort to take the discipline to the next level, they always made sure we fully understood and we aware 'the why' before they did the after-action counseling. Not once did I behave in a certain manner and not understand the consequences of what would happen, I knew full well what was going to happen. I avoided many whippings - by understanding what my parents expected of me.

All 8 of us turned out to be well adjusted, functioning members of society. Now as adults when we manage to get together, we laugh with my parents about those butt kickings we got as kids. Hence the reason we have have great love and respect for mom and dad., they had a tough job to do and we appreciated the sacrifice of trying to raise 8 kids.

Absolutely not. Just because I don't believe beating a child is effective it doesn't mean they will run wild either. Keeping a kid entertained is vital of course so let them watch movies, bring toys, colouring books, whatever or keep them up late the night before so they sleep, etc. I believe in explaining my expectations to a child and then following up with consequences. If you treat kids like humans and reward positive behaviour you get much faster, healthier results. This is how I was raised and I have a loving relationship with my parents who I respect deeply and do not fear. I don't fear them because they raised me like I was an adult, not like a dog who pissed on the carpet, so out of respect I do as they ask of me, not because I'm scared of getting my #### tanned.

How many children have you successfuly raised to adulthood? I have 3 of 4 so far, the other is an honors student already taking two math classes in college while a junior in HS...he is the "dumb one". I have/had no fear of my parents, my father was my best friend in the world. Had I misbehaved he would have cracked me one. My mother is still alive and bet she still has the "brat bat" in the kitchen drawer.

I expect it was discipline that helped them to be successful. It could be that they are all firearms enthusiasts and own/use firearms regularly. Or maybe it was because they were expected to EARN their privileges and things by work, or maybe that they were expected to contribute to the family, or maybe because we expect the best they can be. At any rate, I will take success as a good measure.

In the Philippines disciplinary action is acceptable. End result:

Children there, take care of their aging parents no matter what. In the US, spoiled American kids send their parents to "home for the aged"

It's not only in the Philippines but many Asian countries as well. Asian parents are more "disciplinarian" than Western counterparts nowadays and yet children, in gratitude to their parents discipline and upbringing, take care of their parents in their old age while it is common for Westerners to "dump" their parents in businesses making bucks out of aging people.

It's the same in Belarus (White Russia). The children there are respectful and well disciplined. One look by a parent and the children know what's what. There's no debating, no arguing. The parents are the parents and act as such, and the children are the children and act as such. There's no switching roles between parent and child over there.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Moderator hat off:

I am not against spanking- we spank the kids at home because especially with little ones (ours are pre-school age), you can't always argue with them. But I would not want my kids spanked at school- severe discipline like that should be rare, and only administered by the parents.

There's a bit of a balance between a butt swat and explaining/rationalizing with a child.

The truth is, is that there's a psychology behind it.

Some children (even at a young age) understand raised voices/trying to reason with them. Other's understand physical pain like any other animal might when you don't want them to do something.

Not every child needs to be spanked, not every child needs to have a belt taken to them, and not every child will ever be hit/need to be in their life.

However, for every child that doesn't need to be, there is one that does. Instead of discipline in this modern society we have decided to pump them full of drugs and just say they have behavioural issues. When the reality is that they just need a good ####### whoppin' and then to be sent on their merry way.

There are legit out of control kids that can't be talked to or spanked to get through to them, but watching BS shows like "Super Nanny" and learning about the "Naughty Step" is a bunch of hogwash that is only going to work on a very select few kids if you aren't willing to back it up with a spat on the butt if they keep acting up.

Yep - now spanking is called abuse. I got my butt whipped in school and had no adverse affect on my future emotional well being. Maybe this change in societal norms is one of the reasons we have about 4 million kids on ritalin. It's not politically correct to discipline them, so drug them and they will behave.

Corporal punishment should be up to the parents, not the school. There is no guarantee that the teachers would know what works for my kid and what doesn't, so they should not have such power. In Russia, parents can spank their children, but not the teacher.

Of course, it would only be fare that school should have the right to deny attendance to misbehaving child though. Missing school means missing work for parents, so you better believe they would take action.

My mother spanked me 4 times through early childhood. Till this day I despise her for it. Last time she attempted, I was a teenager, so I threw her on a bed and told her that I would spank her if she ever tried to get physical with me again. Aggression breeds aggression. Beat your kids at your own risk ;)

A spanking is better than drugs. But, spanking is child abuse. So, doctors prescribe drugs. Those drugs have an adverse affect on your child overtime. Bags under the eyes, emotional problems, calm and sometimes violent behavior. Unpredicable behavior.
