I always used a travel agent in Oakland. They send a driver to the VN consulate in San Francisco every day to drop off and pick up passports. I never really paid any attention to what they charged for the visa fees. It was trivial compared to the cost of the airline ticket.

lol after I read thoroughly then my tio is not alone dealing with VN consulate/embassy. Can't believe they lose face at the very first door to Vietnam. Does anyone happen to be in Vietnam in April? Can't wait to come back.

I paid 40 or 60 bucks from the Vietnamese travel agent for my tourist Visa.

Yeah, when I traveled last year, I paid $50 for a visa with the travel agency too.

And I have gotten a few co-worker visas done throught the same agency for $50 a piece...without buying the plane tickets through them.

They have told me that a 5 year visas (somethin I not quite clear on) cost $100. Think the visa is so you can stay in Vietnam for 5 years????

I know they charge a little more for multiple entries into Vietnam...you would need this visa if you want to travel out of vietnam to neighboring countries.

Why mess with the Consulate here if they are being Ahole?

5 year is 25 bucks... plus a fee (if I recall around 10 bucks)... but will be for a shorter period that 5 years if the passport isnt valid for 5.5 years at the time of issue. Its for relatives of VN citizens.. Those of us who marry VN folks... they are good for 5 years.. multple entry... 90 days at a shot... if you want to stay longer than 90 days you need to got to an immigration office and renew it for another 90 days...

I've been in Hanoi 4 times now since 2008, and always use the VOA system - I can also tell you an excellent agent there who can get you the VOA letter, as well as any other services you might need (train tickets, cruises or just good advice). Contact Mr. Trung the owner of hotel in hanoi - the most generous and competent agent that I know of in Vietnam.

I don't think you will find better or faster turnaround for VOA - I requested another one for my Nov 2012 trip about 24 hours ago, and received the Approval Letter this morning by email. All you need do is print out the letter, show it to your airline, and you're set to go. On arrival, you will need US$25. and 1 passport picture (single entry) at the airport.
