If someone, let's call him Daniel, is prepared to sponsor you and he lives with his wife who also works, he can combine her income with his by having her complete the I-864A.

So if both earn, say, $15k each, neither individually topping the poverty threshold, but both jointly do exceed the minimum requirements, if one fills out I-864, the other I-864A, and both provide a couple of years' worth of tax transcripts, and employment proof... and we sign two of those petitioner-sponsor contract papers (what's that called?), that'd be okay?

Get out an I-864 and follow along as you read this--

Your wife does an I-864 as your primary sponsor.

Daniel does I-864 as the joint sponsor.

Line 21a is you (1)

Line 21b is Daniel

Line 21c is Mrs Daniel

Family size 3

Line 23 - Daniel's income by himself $15,000

Line 24a - Daniel's income by himself $15,000

Line 24b - Mrs. Daniel, spouse, $15,000

Line 24c - Total Household Income $30,000

Line 24d - check

Line 24e - [blank]

Explanation. Daniel can include his wife in the total household because they live in the same house and she is his spouse. If the total household income meets your mark, then you're set. BUT Daniel can't offer Mrs. Daniel's income without her permission. Form I-864A is her permission slip.

Read the actual instructions for the I-864A for the details of what to include for Mrs. Daniel. Page 2. http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-864ainstr.pdf

If they are qualified household members - such as a person and his/her spouse. If they are just two people who do not live together or live together and aren't qualifying household members (like roommates), then that will not work. In that case, one person would have to meet the requirements on their own.
