Hey friends,

I would be moving to US very soon, and would like to get familiar with certain things as I would need them right away.

I checked out the mobile connection plans, and seems really expensive per month compare to India. Be frank, India seems to have cheapest plans for mobile. Like free incoming, and 1 cent per min ( anywhere national-wide ). lol

I dont know why Skype has cheapest calling plans for US @ $6.95 USD, while unlimited calling plans thru mobile is quite expensive. Doesnt make sense to me. But anyway, whatever it is, I have to buy whatever is available in the market.

Could you please suggest me a good mobile connection provider company? whether I should go with GSM or CDMA? Most important thing is that I need better voice quality service, no single drop. I need nationalwide roaming, GPS feature, and little bit I may use interest. That is it.

I dont know whether I should pick up unlimited plans or limited. But I would not be having alot of calls.

Please suggest me any good provider with awesome voice quality, no single drop problem, GPS, little bit internet usage. That is it.

I would be using it in Fort Myers, Fl.

Thank you for your suggestions! :)

Welcome to SW Florida! If you want to use a GSM phone here your only two choices will be ATT or T-Mobile. Many people are happy with Verizon for their coverage.

There are several unlimited plans now too. Metro PCS, Virgin mobile, etc.

Do you have a GSM smartphone you want to use? Do you want to be able to use the same phone in the US as in India?

Phone service here is almost a monopoly, so it is expensive.

I think I will go with prepaid connection for a month or so, as I want to make sure what would be my daily usage, and I dont sign up any 2 yrs contract.

Currently I have Nokia N8, N95 ( Unlocked phone ), I can use any GSM sim. It would be good if I just can buy a SIM card only and would be using my Indian phone, so I dont have to block unnecessary money. Since I am moving to US, and need to settle down the life.

:) I checked their websites, but they seem to force the customer to buy their phone. I dont know why there is not simple option to buy SIM card only. Is there any option to buy the SIM card only and use my Indian GSM phone?

Thank you!

Whats your views for CDMA provider? I haven't used CDMA provider in India ( even it is cheaper service provider ), and I dont know how good CDMA is in US in term of voice quality, etc etc.

Thank you!

Sure you can just buy the SIM card. I bought a T-Mobile SIM for my wife for $4. Now they are about $7.

Check AT&T GoPhone. Closest thing you can get to Verizon (IMHO) Nationwide.

Here is a link on Amazon for a starter card. You can buy minutes at any Walmart.

Hope that helps. They say you can buy this at an AT&T store but they will try to pressure you into buying a2-yr plan as well...

Just wondering if it is easy to get fancy mobile number like ending with 0000 or 1111 like this. Do they charge any extra fee for this? What can be the appox fee for such kind of number?
