HEBRON, Ky. — Mitt Romney’s campaign stuck to its case that he’s still winning the GOP nomination battle Wednesday, despite the fact that the former Massachusetts governor placed third in two important Southern states that are part of the Republican Party base.

...

Political director Rich Beeson argued that it didn’t actually matter how the candidate placed in the popular vote since he continued to steadily accrue delegates in the march to 1,144 — the number needed to clinch the GOP presidential nod.

“While Rick Santorum is taking a victory lap after Alabama and Mississippi, the fact remains that nothing has changed or advanced his chances of getting the Republican nomination,” Beeson wrote in a memo distributed midday Wednesday. “Tuesday’s results actually increased Gov. Romney’s delegate lead, while his opponents only moved closer to their date of mathematical elimination.”

...

“The real fact is that what we need more than anything is patience,” the adviser said. “We are going to win this…We need to be patient, stick to our game plan and not let what seem to be opportunities to end this confuse us. We are going to campaign into June. So what? Big deal, that is what we are built for. This is not the NCAA where it is one-and-done.”
