A 3-year-old boy in Tacoma, Washington shot and killed himself with a gun he found in his family's car as they stopped at a gas station.

It was the third recent shooting of a child in western Washington.

Tacoma police Officer Naveed Benjamin said:

"It is incredible in light of the other ones. You would think people would take more care, not less."

The family was traveling and had stopped for gas about 12:30 a.m. at the Tacoma station off Interstate 5.

The man put his pistol under the seat and got out to pump gas, while the boy's mother went inside the station, Benjamin said.

They left her son and her boyfriend's 5-year-old daughter in the car when the boy climbed out of his child seat, found the gun and shot himself. He was declared dead at a hospital; the girl was not injured.

This is the second death in two days involving little kids getting their hands on guns. Yesterday we reported that a 9-year-old autistic girl from Little Rock, Arkansas shot and killed her 7-year-old brother at their family's apartment while her parents were away.

Detectives questioned the parents and have called the shooting a tragic accident.

Basic common sense of securing the gun or keeping it unloaded could have prevented this tragedy.

Parents ought to be brought up on charges. Letting your 3 year old get his hands on an unsecured gun isn't an accident. It's a crime.

agreed. just a bit of common sense on the part of the adults and this story wouldn't have happened.

This is a good example of why guns should be banned from citizens.

Nope -- this is a good example of what happens when children have negligent parents.

Parents often have auto accidents where children are killed, should we ban cars?

Contact and non-contact sports can result in injuries to the brain. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that there are over 300,000 sports-related traumatic brain injuries each year. About 20% of high school athletes sustain a brain injury each season. Over 60% of those are football-related. 50,000 children sustain bicycle-related brain injuries each year in the United States. Over 400 of those children die as a result.

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."
