My wife is awaiting her AOS interview and has had her biometrics. She applied for a social security card about a month ago but has not received it yet. The SS office gave us a number to call at Homeland Security to call and find out the status of her SSN application. I got caught in the voicemail mess and when I finally reached a real person, he didn't have a clue. The SS office said it usually takes 2 or 3 weeks at the most to get a card for someone going through the AOS process. Is the 4 week wait unusual? If so, does anyone know who we can contact? As usual, the US government is no help at all. Thanks.

In my case, i waited for 4 weeks and no SS card or number came.. what i did is, since i need to change information, i went to their office to change it and follow it up. after a week i received my card.. i suggest if your really need it try to drop by to their office, it is much better to talk to a real officer than to call the call center..

Fill in your timeline so we know where you are in the process.

I'll assume, since you've already filed for AOS, that her I-94 has expired. If this is the case, then a number of weeks for approval is correct and to be expected. If you had filed prior to it expiring, then you'd only wait about 2 weeks.

When I applied for my card (name change and GC - I had one already from prior to marriage that took 4 days to get) I waited about a month and heard nothing. I called the main office and they told me I needed to speak to the office I applied at because they (the main office) couldn't see anything. I called the local office and found out that they hadn't processed it! Turns out they hadn't taken some info off my GC that they needed so I had to go in again and do it. It's not normal to wait 4 weeks. If the i-94 is still valid call them to find out what's going on.

Her I94 expired on 3/9/12 but we applied for the SS card on 2/6/12. We were told that she would receive her card in about 2 weeks. Her biometrics were completed on 3/5/12. We went to the local SS office a few days ago to inquire but they gave us a number to call Homeland Security. They didn't know anything about social security cards for immigrants.

As her I-94 is expired there's nothing you can do now. They can't process it anymore... even if it is/was their fault. You need to wait for the EAD now.
