This is from a thread earlier today and is a very interesting thing to consider for us fiance and marriage visa folks.

We should start a challenge - what did you buy for the wedding which was more expensive than your immigration fees? :D Haha

For me, the answer is NOTHING. That visa plus the delays involved pretty much decided the wedding ceremony for us.

How about the rest of y'all?

I answered based on the cost of the K-1 visa only, but since our total Fees all the way through ROC (current process) exceed $2000, only the catering bill was larger.

K-1:

January 28, 2009: NOA1

June 4, 2009: Interview - APPROVED!!!

October 11, 2009: Wedding

AOS:

December 23, 2009: NOA1!

January 22, 2010: Bogus RFE corrected through congressional inquiry "EAD waiting on biometrics only" Read about it here.

March 15, 2010: AOS interview - RFE for I-693 vaccination supplement - CS signed part 6!

March 27, 2010: Green Card recieved

ROC:

March 1, 2012: Mailed ROC package

March 7, 2012: Tracking says "notice left"...after a phone call to post office.

More detailed time line in profile.

If I add up all the immigration fees I would say that was the big ticket item. Immigration (including AOS) and travel fees that is. Our wedding was simple.

In this survey, please include the cost of everything that you won't normally be paying for when marrying the boy/girl next door.

I have included everything visa/AOS related in my calculating. Since the visa is a part of the process and is worthless without the adjustment of status and the photocopies and mailing documents and medical interview and, phone calls and, supplies, and I hadn't included the travel costs. The flight throws an extra 1500+-U$ into the mix.

Without crunching the numbers on paper, I am guestimating the wallet pain for us from filing to AOS including him flying here to be between 3300 and 3700U$. (1000+- to get through everything to the interview, 1000+ for AOS, 1500+- for the flight)

I think I need to rename our car fund account to the immigration fund account.

Our wedding only cost $1000 and that included our honeymoon and my husband's flight from the US to Canada and back... So that being said I think the visa process cost us more. My husband hired a lawyer which was a waste of money :P, plus the flight to Montreal and back and all the other fees... we probably spent at least $2000, if not more..

The diamond-studded toe rings cost the most for us. She likes them, though, so that's a plus.

It is kind of weird that 40% of the respondants to this survey have stated that it was worth it. Hhhmmm........
