Hello,

My question is in regards to one of the check list items for a K1 Visa at the Ciudad Juarez Consulate in Mexico. In Item 11 it asks for Petitioner's Proof of legal status. I am the petitioner, a naturalized U.S citizen, Does it mean i have to provide a copy of my naturalization certificate? I heard from word of mouth that it is not permitted to make a copy of the certificate document.

Here is what it says:

11. PETITIONER’S PROOF OF LEGAL STATUS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA): It is important that the day of

your appointment you bring a legible copy of petitioner’s current proof of legal status in the USA.

what do u mean is not legal to make a copy? it is. at my k1 interview i only had copies, some notarized some not. if you dont feel safe making just a simple copy of your naturalization certificate make a legal one. it costs some money but whatever you wish for.

You're allowed to make a copy. If you want, then make it twice the normal size so it fills out the whole paper. And yes, you'll have to provide evidence of you being a US citizen by the time of the K1 interview(for the affidavit of support).

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

Click timeline or "about me" for all details.

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until greencard in hand: 655 days

Provide a copy of your naturalization certificate, or if you have a US passport, make a copy of the whole thing instead. You can use either.

I am not sure what checklist you are referring to for Juarez though. For the CDJ instructions, #11 is about the medical exam, and #7 says proof of petitioner being a USC.

7. Proof of U.S. Citizenship for petitioner (Birth certificate or U.S. Passport).

What it says on the certificate is "It is punishable by U.S. law to copy, print, or photograph this document without lawful authority." Making a copy to provide to an agency of the US government is "lawful authority". You can make copies to submit to any US government agency.
