Hi - I am about to file the petition for the I-130 (this weekend) and I assume at some point the embassy will contact me and the next step will be to surrender my passport while my application is processed? Anyone have any idea if that is the case and when (approximately) it might be? I have a friends wedding in July, therefore I don't want to be passport-less for that time.........

Thanks!

You're not "surrendering" your passport at any time. You REALLY need to read the guides you can find on this website to learn the different steps in this process!

CR1 Visa

USCIS STAGE: 16 days No expedite request but USC residing abroad
NVC STAGE: 19 days from case # to case complete
03/27/12: interview at Paris embassy - APPROVED
04/12/12: POE San Diego

ROC
01/15/14: sent I-751 application

05/14/14: received card production notification by e-mail, approval date 05/13

Naturalization

02/01/24: N-400 submitted online; Biometrics reuse notice received immediately online; "case being actively reviewed" after a couple hours

02/09/24: received NOA1 by mail

02/10/24: received biometrics reuse notice by mail

04/08/24: interview scheduled for 05/14. Received "We have taken an action in your case" email.

05/14/24: approved at interview, same-day oath ceremony in San Francisco 🥳 🇺🇸

Passport

06/10/24: application submitted at post office for passport book and card, paid for expedited processing and shipping

06/24/24: received email notification that passport was approved, then shipped with tracking number

06/25/24: passport received

technically the OP is correct but so is Laure&Colin -

You will be required to send your passport to the embassy - but should be able to request it back from them - which may (they dont tell you this im sure) put your case on hold... am i wrong in assuming this?

You will need to balance your need for immigration and the wedding....more than likely your wedding plans in july will not coincide with your need to send the passport to the embassy as you said you are only just filing for the I-130 - it will take months before you reach the embassy stage.

Please update your profile with type of petition to be filed etc and what kind of resident etc you and your spouse are... USC are put to the head of the line in front of LPRs like me... but dont get me started :)

Yea you are wrong in assuming this because not all embassys require you to send the passport. Most require you to use it to enter the embassy and then take it from you after you pass the interview.

Months from now you will interview in London. Several possible scenarios from interviewer:

"You are approved". Keeps passport. "Pay the courier on your way out". Passport delivered with visa by DX Secure courier in 3-5 days.

"You didn't bring the correct document". You send missing doc in. They notify you the visa has been approved. You contact DX Secure to collect your passport for delivery to the embassy. They issue visa and DX Secure delivers it back to you.

"We need to do further background checks. We will notify you when to send your passport." You wait weeks/months for visa approval. They notify you the visa has been approved. You contact DX Secure to collect your passport for delivery to the embassy. They issue visa and DX Secure delivers it back to you.
