Hello,

a friend of mine who has a 10 year tourist visa (B2) received a call from the us consulate in her home country to let her know that they had cancelled the remaining 2 years in it.

The first time she applied, 10 years ago, she received a 3 months visa, and went to visa for a month.

Then she applied 2 years later and got a 10 year visa, that she used for 2 visits: one for 4 months, few years later one for 3 weeks.

now, they called her and said that even if her visa is still good for 2 more years, they re cancelling it.

any idea why? she couldn t get a response.

she lives in her home country, married with 2 young kids who go to school, and has no plans to move to the us.

Thank you all!

Not sure but it could be because of low activity meaning she's not using her B2 often enough. She should still try contacting her US embassy to get further information. Are you certain your friend is telling the entire truth? I asked because she could have done something intentionally/unintentionally and consulate officials found out and so revoked your friend's visa without explanation.

sorry, but there are only two reasons this would happen:

(1) she has been less than forthright with you in discussing her travel history, and has instead had numerous lengthy stays, and thus the VOs assumed (correctly) that she was working while being a 'tourist' -- and may have purchased a back dated entry stamp from the airport officials at the airport in HER country, with the idea of disguising those long stays....or....

(2) someone from her office called and ratted her out, stating that she was fired (or was about to be fired) and that she had planned to use her tourist visa to make good her escape to the US....

VOs cannot just summarily revoke a visa...they have to have a pretty solid reason to do so....there is a much higher bar for this action than to just merely refuse a visa applicant....

sounds like you are not hearing the entire story.....

so they went to the time and trouble after 8 years of tracking her down

4 months?

that's more than 90 days.

USUALLY one gets 90 days on an I-94, on a tourist visa.

There are exceptions, sure, but

I think 'your friend' overstayed once.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

It's usually 6 months for a B2. 90 days is for the VWP.

Something else happened...it might have been a routine check of entry and departure records or, as I mentioned for my second guess, is that she either has been or is about to be fired from her job, and somebody phoned the embassy, who phoned her company...(perhaps a jilted significant other??)...this did not likely happen by random accident.

If there was no misuse of the visa your scenario certainly sounds odd. How certain is your friend that it was the consulate that was calling her? Perhaps someone is trying to mess with her. Had she been talking about planning another trip?

Thank you all for your inputs.

She never overstayed..she had 6months and stayed 4 months.

Also, she s not working in her home working, and never pretended to. She applied for visa along with her husband, and got her 10 year visa with him too.

I asked to check if it's not someone who s playing a joke on her. She checked the number and it was the us consulate one. So no joke.

It s kind of weird..cause she really never overstayed...and well, when you have a 10 year visa, u re not obliged to use it every year..u want to visit other places, no? So 2 trips so far is good enuf, I think.

I advised her to email them and ask why..maybe they would give her a better answer than the person who just called to give her the news.

There could be many reasons why a visitor visa is being revolked. Listed below are some examples:

Information submitted orginally has now been verified and something is wrong.

Husband job may no longer sponsor the wife for the visitor visa

Entertainers and Artists are known to have visitor visa problems

Not enough information given about home country.

The home country could be in a turmoil.

Political issues could be involved.

The list could go on and on,but again all of this is just speculation without more details.

Those 'scenarios' I suggested were based on actual events I have observed in the past when working as an intern some years ago. When visas were revoked, one of those two 'scenarios' were the most common reasons for that action. VOs just didn't have the time nor inclination to start reviewing everyone's travel patterns, but when new information came to light (often via a 'poison pen' letter) then someone would look into it (and I did myself at times when asked by a VO). In recent years, VOs have quicker access to travel records and routinely review them when people apply for a renewal of their visa and there is additional information or flags that suggest possible misuse of said visa. But I never observed a VO revoking a visa just for something to do.....there are too many other checks and balances that must be met before the final cancellation takes place.

Perhaps we will hear some follow up soon from the OP....

Low activity does not mean they cancel the visa.

This call just seems odd.

Once can have a 10 yr B1/2 and never visit - they never cancel the visa for that reason.
