Once the embassy receives packet 3, how long does it generally take for them to give you a date for an interview?

I am sending mine to the embassy in Sydney.

It can depend. Typically you will hear back within the week after you send P3 and the interview will be less than a month away. Sometimes it will take 2 weeks.

It is important to stay on top of it because there was a situation recently where P4 wasn't received but the interview WAS booked. They people involved stayed on top of it and eventually received P4 in time for their interview (this week). So if you don't hear after 2 weeks email the consulate to find out what's going on.

I thought you need to make appointment with the embassy to have your interview???? Anyways not sure about that but that was I read somewhere before.

The longer it takes to happen the more you'll appreciate it when it does!

Well they sent me an email requesting me to attend an interview on a date about 3 weeks from the time I received email....but I emailed back requesting an earlier interview due to the fact I had 3 kids I needed to get settled into a new country school system and I had been waiting LONG ENough!

I received a phone call straight away and an interview was arranged for me to attend next week....in otherwords, be here in 3 days....

I was in a state of shock!

Each consulate/embassy has its own procedures for applying for the visa. The Sydney consulate will send you an email with your interview date once you have submitted the requested documents. Other consulates/embassies require you to make your own appointment.
