My immigrant wife and I separated and can divorce in May. She has been cooperative thus far. We are doing a no fault divorce on our own to avoid making lawyers rich.

The only issue she faces after we divorce is health care. My health insurance is Medicare and TriCare. I can visit military, VA, or civilian health providers. Up to now my estranged wife also got health care from the military through TriCare for dependents. After the divorce she will not have health insurance any longer and her jobs don't provide any coverage.

I don't wish to put her in a situation where she has no health care available even though we are divorcing. At the same time, I can't afford to pay for any insurance for her.

Any suggestions? Public Health clinics? Affordable temporary insurance? Looking for help.

Thanks.

COBRA is most likely the most expensive insurance there is. Look around on the internet for private insurance. If you skip the dental, vision stuff and just go with basic medical you should find some inexpensive policies.

Tough situation! There should be something available that is affordable for the millions of people like her. The 'Affordable Care Act' does promise to help but it does not take full effect until 2014 and that is assuming that the repubs are unsuccessful in judicial or legislative attempts to overturn it. I know you don't want to stay married till 2014 just to solve this problem. It is quite honorable that you are concerned with her well-being even after your divorce is to be final. Too many people would actually be wishing for her to have things as miserable as possible.

At least you will continue to get good government run health insurance!

No, not "good government run health insurance"...it's employer-based insurance. My employer, the US Army, employed me and put medical care in the deal. The VA medical deal is another story, but I avoid the VA as much as I can. If you follow the military news, you'll see that TriCare, the outfit that oversees the medical care for retirees, is going to cost a lot more in the near future and they took dental care away a long time ago. Chip...chip...chip away. That's how Uncle Sam does it. Broken promises...just what everyone can look forward to with government run health care.
